"'Why can men not come to the island?'
It was the first time Jai had ever asked a question in class. All heads turned toward her, but Sister O did not seem to notice anything unusual.
'This is sacred ground. The First Sisters knew it as soon as they arrived.'"

Book 1 - 12.01.2021
Maresi - Maria Turtschaninoff
I’ve decided to try and read more this year, as I really struggled to read in 2020 due to work. To start, I chose to re-read Maresi, by Maria Turtshaninoff in order to prepare for the second book in the series. This is part of my effort to read more books from non-North American authors, as the author is from Finland!
The book is the first one in The Red Abbey Chronicles, which tells the story of the island of Menos and the women in it. The island and the Red Abbey have become somewhat of a refuge to women, a safe place but also a place to seek knowledge. The book is narrated by Maresi, a novice in the Abbey, who got there after her land was struck by famine.
If you’re into fantasy fiction and badass women, I’d totally recomend it. It has a few delicate/violent moments, and you should be mindfull if it can be triggering for you, but I’d note there is nothing too graphic in the book. Overall, really nice book with good universe building and well developed characters. Totally recommend!

"I saw the same thing in him as I had seen in the eyes of the men who stole me and my sisters that night, and in the eyes of the man who had sold me for silver and gold: to them I am a thing."

Maresi from Breven från Maresi/Maresin Voima because I really wanted to paint fire
25 Days of Booklr: Day 25 - Best Book of 2017 Maresi was the only book I read this year that was actually released in 2017. That made it a shoe-in for this last nomination. This book reads like a love letter to Ursula K Le Guin. Though it wears it's influence boldly, I still found it refreshingly original in the oversaturated YA market. This is a quick, but stunning, read. The second book is being released soon I'm the USA!
