If they kill off someone, it has better be a minor character. Killing Matthew would be sabotage. So I would be partial to have Sir Anthony die to give something meaty for Laura C. to play this season.
I don't know... I have no objection to a major character being killed off if it's done well and fits the plot. If they say a major character is going to die then s/he doesn't then that's a massive cheat IMO. Sir Anthony dying could be very interesting, I agree, leaving Edith a wealthy and independent widow. OTOH it would be interesting to see the development of a relationship which might well not be as passionate as Mary or Sybil's - probably rather more realistic. Would provide a good cross-section.

I’d be disappointed if it was Robert this season unless it was a cliffhanger at the end. I want to see him nurturing Matthew as heir. If not this season I hope it will be next season. The adjustment at Downton for everone would be so interesting.
See, I think Matthew's actually at a point now where he is ready to take on the mantel of earl. I'm not quite sure what more mentoring Robert could do. However, I think it as a cliffhanger could work really well. I actually wanted him to die in the Christmas Special last year (yeah, I'm cheerful) so I'd be perfectly happy with this happening at the end of S03!
