How long do the Marchwardens stay away looking after the borders? I was just curious.
07.30.2021
Iâm afraid I donât have a concrete answer to this. Itâs really just up to the imagination and what you want to set it too.Â
It wouldnât be unrealistic if they were gone for years or months or only days and with set rotations or no rotations. They are elves and theyâre extremely hardy beings so the possibilities are kind of limitless.

for the fic request!! beleg/mablung + snowed in, maybe? iâd love some wintertime fluff for these two! and happy holidays to you, friend :D
hi lychee!!! im in love with you /p thanks for the request i did not beg you for at all aha. aha <3
to my favorite person in this fandom,
.
Mablung shoves the door closed, and shoulder checks it twice for good measure. âI hate this city,â he grumbles. Beleg laughs, pulls him through the house to the living room.
âWe donât even live in the city,â he tells him. Mablung hits him, lighthearted.
"Might as well. The neighbours are certainly loud enough for it," he says, tipping his head in the direction of the door. He slumps onto the couch, and taps his fingers against his thigh. Beleg sits on the floor before him, legs crossed.
"The neighbours are birds, Mablung."
Mablung shrugs. "How are the cell towers?"
"That's your concern?" Beleg stands and circles round the couch to find his phone. "They'reâ " he swipes it open, "down. They're down." They sigh at the same time.
"Well then," Mablung says. He crosses the room to peer out the window. "Knowing this fucking state, either it'll be storming for another three days or it's going to stop in five minutes."
"Mmh," Beleg says, distracted. Mablung draws the drapes closed again.
"Power's on?"
"Yeah, I checked," Beleg says, leaning over to turn on the lights.
"I'm running the stove then. We're making hot chocolate and waiting this shit out."
Beleg laughs, delighted, and climbs over the couch to tuck himself under Mablung's arm. "No way. Mablung doing something fun of his own volition?"
He scoffs and shoves him, gentle. "Watch me change my mind for that. Where'd you hide the chocolate?"
Beleg ducks away from Mablung and nudges a cabinet with his foot.
"Mkay," he says, as Beleg reaches for the fridge door. He finds the Ghirardelli and turns up the stove. "How do you feel about coffee, today," he asks when Beleg comes up to set his chin over his shoulder.
"Let's go," Beleg says, bumping their temples together affectionately.
"Good," Mablung says. The milk starts to simmer, and he finds the chopsticks to poke the squares of chocolate around. The timer beeps, and he reaches for the dial to turn the heat off. Beleg has already turned away to find mugs, the ceramic clicking together under the sound of the milk bubbling.
They settle in Beleg's room. Mablung's not going to spill, and if Beleg happens to that's his problem.
"Where're the marshmallows," Beleg says around the lip of his mug.
"Find them yourself, coward," Mablung says. Beleg steals a kiss and sets down his chocolate.
"Hey, what the hell did y' put in yours," he says, standing.
"Fuck around and find out," Mablung calls back as he slips out the room, blanket around his shoulders. He huffs and stretches out his legs, readjusting.
"I brought them here. Because I'm an actually good person." Mablung looks up and slides his mug over. Beleg sits on his lap anyways, and reaches into the bag (like a heathen), holds out a handful for Mablung. He drops a few into his mug and puts the rest into his mouth. Beleg steals another kiss, quick.
"You know there's more milk in the pan," Mablung hums. Beleg laughs.
"I'm not out yet. You put something else into yours, I can taste it, you liar."
He smiles and doesn't say anything, takes another sip and wraps his arms around Beleg.
Iâm sorry to have hung onto these for so long theyâre all nice q u q
To me the marchwardens are very close, like a somewhat dyfunctional family close. There are going to be ones that donât like each other but when things are serious they can work together no problem. Theyâre very touchy, open, a bit wild still. Most of them donât live in Doriath, theyâre out past the boards keeping things as safe as they can. But their loyalty to each other is forever.
In my mind, if you saw any of my Doriath art stuff, they all have these blue tribal tattoos. They wear piercings and basically are just their own traveling home. When they get together itâs loud, they know how to have a good time and kick back.
Slightly wild elves who know how to party. AnddonâtalwayslistentoThingolbutitâsokay
The Marchwardens of Middle Earth: They are Everywhere
As dwarf lovers are glowing over the return of the House of Durin, there may be a few fans of Haldir (who has already made a comeback in Book II: The Saga of Thranduil with mentions of him sending his brother RĂșmil from LĂłrien to the court of King Oropher with a message from Celeborn--and had you been reading you would have learned that it was a ruse and the message was sent by Amdir, King of LĂłrien without the knowledge of Celeborn or Galadriel and there is more to that reason than even Amroth spoke of to Thranduil and his cousin Elranduil. Even before writing TKWRT, I had a thing for Haldir. He was calm, cool, and very stoic. I liked his style.
Everyone is familiar with Haldir from the LOTR Trilogy (portrayed by Craig Parker) and his death at Helmâs Deep. That struck me as odd, though I never thought much about it until saw LOTR: Two Towers and for some reason, I began to remember that very long and large book I had to read in Junior High. So I asked a few of my Tolkien Geek friends about some things (this was before realizing I was always a Tolkien Geek--I just came out of the closet in full force).
It was then, for some reason Haldir came to mind. See, wrote a minor âskitâ for the sole purpose of satirizing the Fellowshipâs run in with Haldir. When I got my first histories and the Children of HĂșrin, I realized one of two things: 1) Haldir of LĂłrien (LothlĂłrien by this time) shouldnât have been at Helmâs Deep, and 2) PJ may have put him there because of the Haldir, son of Halmir of Brethil who died in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. That Haldir was not an elf.
The role of the Marchwardens is to protect the borders. They should never go anywhere unless a) there is enough marchwardens to ensure proper security and b) to know every language in Middle Earth fluently in order to question those coming in into their borders. In the case of Amdir having Haldir (the elf) send RĂșmil to Eryn Galen, that was the case as Haldir had another brother serving as marchwarden, Orophin. According to several sources prior to reading Tolkien, he was known to be a Silvan and speak Silvan and Westron (or TA Westernesse i.e. AdĂ»naic).
If he only spoke those two languages, why is he speaking âSindarinâ in the LOTR Films. (Silvan was a dead language thanks to Oropher and Westernesse would eventually become the official language of Middle Earth by the end of the Third Age. Haldir and his brothers (it is speculated) had already left for the Grey Haven to sail into the West. Tolkienâs description of him are vague and often seems to lean more toward he and his brothers being Sindar (more later when I get to the appendix--it is annotated to the hilt on TOP of new characters).Â
Either way, the marchwardens by trade are armed border guards required to be know all languages. Even in the book, they donât know âcommonâ speech, which has been interpreted to mean he is unacquainted with what you might call slang, as by the Third Age Sindarin should be known by everyone in Middle Earth so unless the Fellowship was speaking Chinese, what he didnât understand much was probably the dialectic usage of a known language.
There is a tradition of marchwardens since Doriath, so Haldir comes from a proud tradition. That tradition would include marchwardens in Rivendell and of course Mirkwood. In Book II, there are many, but the ones you should already know are:
Marchwardens of Eryn Galen:
AramĂr: Marchwarden of the North, brother of Aramoth
Aramoth: Marchwarden of the South, brother of AramĂr
SildĂŽr: Marchwarden of the West, brother of FindĂŽl
FindĂŽl: Marchwarden of the East, brother of SildĂŽr
AramĂr and Aramoth are the sons of NĂźnuir, a charge of an elven battalion in the Army of Eryn Galen under GaldĂșmĂźr and EldĂ»mĂr. SildĂŽr and FindĂŽl are the sons of FinĂ«ar, member of the council of King Oropher. By the time of the death of Queen ĂlĂșriel, there are changes made as there are promotions made to cover the great losses during the War of the Last Alliance. I made sure that the Marchwardens had a union--or at least were aware of one another because that would make sense as they are kindred and should know each otherâs comings and goings as Sauron makes a comeback.Â
Yes, there are moments when TKWR Trilogy can sound less like a fan fiction and more like something out of a Tolkienâs universe which makes it either hard to follow, and painstakingly specific. But I couldnât honor one of my favorite authors with something less than what he would understand.--J.

Eight Reasons Haldir and the Wardens of Lorien are Awesome
The Wardens scare Legolas (lâil shits)
They donât stop Sam from climbing up with Frodo, or even mention it, even though they initially said only Legolas and Frodo could climb up to them.Â
Haldir speaks Westron b/c heâs a scout/spy for Lorien in the world outside
Haldir lets Gimli into Lorien even though laws, custom, and his own preference say not to
Haldir still insists on Gimli being blindfolded, which is species-ist but sensibly ass-covering given that heâs a lower-tier worker in a species-ist society
The Wardens share their food with the hobbits but not with the rest of the Fellowship (IDK if thatâs âawesomeâ per se but it made me laugh)
Haldir and the Wardens are good strategists when it comes to fighting Orcs
Haldir is a trustworthy guide for the Fellowship while they are blindfolded
Quotes and implications/meta below the cut!
Fact one: Haldir (and/or one of his companions) informed the Fellowship of their presence by way of scaring Legolas out of a tree, and informed Legolas that the Fellowship âbreathe so loud that they could shoot you in the darkâ
Implication: Playfulness! Haldir and his companions have a tough job fighting and leading Orcs away from Lorienâs boundaries, but theyâre still willing to make some fun where they can, especially when there is a fellow elf in the party of strangers, which bodes well.
Fact two: Haldir doesnât stop Sam from climbing up with Frodo, or even mention it.
Quote: âthey bid [Legolas] climb up with Frodo⊠The others they ask to wait a little, and to keep watch at the foot of the tree⊠Legolas ran lightly up, and Frodo followed slowly; behind came Sam trying not to breathe loudlyâ
Implication: Politeness and respect! They arenât rude about Samâs desire to follow his friend/master in all things. Frodo and Sam are basically a unit and Haldir and company acknowledge this. (Indeed, so does Galadriel, given that she offers both Sam and Frodo the opportunity to look in the Mirror.)
Fact three: Uncommonly for an elf of Lorien, Haldir speaks Westron; this is because he is/has been a scout and spy for Lorien in other lands.
Quote: âThere are some of us still who go abroad for the gathering of news and the watching of our enemies, and they speak the languages of other lands. I am one.)
Implication: Â Haldir is probably pretty curious by natureâmore curious than many other Elves in Lorien, who seem content to stay in their own land and speak their own languages only. This is backed up by Haldirâs later inquisitiveness about the Sea and the elf havens near the Shire. Also, Haldir has probably had some pretty boss adventures while being an elf spy. Â Â
Fact four: Haldir is willing to be persuaded by Frodo and Legolas to allow Gimli, a dwarf, into Lorien, even though âWe have not had dealings with the Dwarves since the Dark Days. They are not permitted in our land.â
Quote: âWe will do this, though it is against our liking.â
Implication: Haldir is willing to bend the rules, go against Elvish custom and law and his own personal preference, and do the right thing by letting the entire Fellowship pass into Lorien, even a Dwarf. He shows a good amount of flexibility and isnât too hidebound. Â Â
Fact five: Haldir insists on Gimli being blindfolded and Aragorn and Legolas taking responsibility for him.
Quote: âIf Aragorn and Legolas will guard him, and answer for him, he shall pass; but he must go blindfold through LothlĂłrien.â
Implication: Haldir isnât a fool; heâs going to make darn sure to cover his ass if heâs breaking the rules! You can see him trying to mitigate Gimliâs presence and shove the responsibility for him onto other people as much as possible. Like many Elves, heâs definitely pretty anti-Dwarf. Â
Fact six: Haldir and the wardens share their food and blankets with the Hobbits but not with the other members of the Fellowship in the talan next door.
Quotes: âWe do not fear themâ and âMerry and Pippin clambered up on to the high flet. They were out of breath and seemed rather scared.â (Aww!)
Implication: The apparent harmlessness of the hobbits (small size, fear of heights, obviously not trained in combat) and the fact that the Elves donât seem to have seen a hobbit before makes me kind of get a âwe should protect these cute small mortalsâ vibe when reading about the march wardensâ care and feeding of Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin.
Fact seven: Haldir and his brothers exhibit effective strategy against enemy. When the Orcs outnumber them 100 to 3 they use tricks to lead the Orcs away and and send a message so a stronger force can overwhelm the Orcs. Also, when Haldir sees Gollum he chooses not to shoot him because it would probably draw the Orcs back to their position.
Quotes: âI did not shoot, for I dared not arouse any cries: we cannot risk battle.â And âThe three of us could not challenge a hundred, so we went ahead and spoke with feigned voices, leading them on into the wood.â
Implication: These donât seem to be new tactics; Haldirâs actions and judgments show his experience fighting against the Enemy. Whether the âfeigned voicesâ were Haldir and his brothers pretending to be other Orcs or members of the Fellowship, or whether Haldir and his brothers know how to throw their voices from a distance, or what, Iâm not sure.
Fact eight: Haldir doesnât let any of the Fellowship stumble while they are blindfolded. Also, he makes friendly conversation with Merry while he guides them.
Quote: âI shall lead you well, and the paths are smooth and straight.â
Implications: It would be easy for Haldir to show the kind of playfulness that was displayed when he and his brother frightened Legolas, but instead he remains reliable and worthy of the trust that the Fellowship place in him by letting him guide them while they are blindfolded. His conversation with Merry seems to indicate that he is going out of his way to communicate pleasantly when possible. (Merry is an excellently neutral choice for a conversation partner; he has no dog in the Elf-Dwarf race, after all. Wise decision there, Haldir.) Â
 Bonus quote:
ââHappy folk are Hobbits to dwell near the shores of the sea!â said Haldir. âIt is long indeed since any of my folk have looked on it, yet still we remember it in song. Tell me of these havens as we walk.â
âI cannot,â said Merry. âI have never seen them. I have never been out of my own land before. And if I had known what the world outside was like, I donât think I should have had the heart to leave it.â
âNot even to see fair Lothlorien?â said Haldir. âThe world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.â
Awww. I love Haldir. He is in mourning for the passing of his home and wary of the growing dark but he still remains positive that there is love and light in the world.
Now: Imagine that Haldir decides to go West and shows up on Merryâs doorstep, and Merry goes with him from the Shire to the Gray Havens to experience another of those places âthat is fairâ and another land in which âlove is mingled with griefâ, and says farewell to Haldir before Haldirâs journey across the Sea. Because that would be super cute. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
