A couple of days ago I read that there is a new type of disease caused by the mosquito “Aedes Aegypti” in the Haiti. This is the same mosquito that carries Dengue, Yellow Fever, Zika, and Chikungunya. The disease is being called Mayaro.

 This has me worried because Haiti is on the island right next to Puerto Rico. We could have the first case of this new disease pretty soon. The symptoms of this new disease are very similar to the other ones. They include fever, fatigue, and pain on articulations. The difference is that Mayaro makes your articulations hurt even more than Chikungunya.

 It is especially worrying to me because apparently, I am like candy for mosquitoes. I already had Chikungunya and my wrists and ankles hurt for a while. For a whole week, I couldn’t get up from my bed. If this new disease is a lot more painful I really don’t want to get it. According to the article, there is no known cure, treatment or vaccine. There is only been one documented case on the sister island.

 According to Future of Science, this arbovirus is not that new as evident by the 2015 date on the article but there is little evidence. It says that the reason for this lack of evidence is how generic the symptoms are. People get some pain and fever and just wait it out instead of going to the doctor. This because there is not much the doctor can do. They just have to wait it out and take some painkillers.

 When I got Chikungunya the main reason I went to the doctor was for a doctor’s note to give my boss and professors. And she pretty much said take some painkillers every 8 hours and drink lots of water so I don’t dehydrate.
