In Hinduism, the guardians of the cardinal directions are called the Lokapālas, or Dikpalaka. The Guardians of the Directions are the deities who rule the specific directions of space.
They are also believed in Vajrayāna Buddhism, especially Kālacakra (wheels of time). Vajrayana (Sanskrit: “Thunderbolt Vehicle” or “Diamond Vehicle”) form of Tantric Buddhism that developed in India and neighbouring countries, notably Tibet. They are the origin of Jyuniten (The Twelve Sky Gods) in esoteric buddhism as well. Three main distinctions of Dikpalaka are recognized, being: ① Aṣṭa-Dikpāla (Guardians of Eight Directions) As a group of eight deities, they are called Aṣṭa-Dikpāla, literally meaning guardians of eight directions:
1. Kubera (North)
2. Yama (South)
3. Indra (East)
4. Varuṇa (West)
5. Īśāna (Northeast)
6. Agni (Southeast)
7. Vayu (Northwest)
8. Nirṛti (Southwest)
②Daśa-Dikpāla ("Guardians of Ten Directions") They are often augmented with two extra deities for the ten directions, the two extra directions being zenith (above) and nadir (below) Besides the eight guardians, the following are added:
Brahma (Zenith, meaning "the farthest up from the gravitational force") Vishnu (Nadir, meaning "the direction in which gravity pulls") ③Nava-Dikpāla ("Guardians of Nine Directions") literally meaning guardians of nine directions, that consist of eight directions with one addition in the centre. It called Dewata Nawa Sanga in ancient Java and Bali Hinduism:

6. Sambhu (Northeast)

ローカパーラ
ローカパーラ（Lōkapāla）またはディクパラ（Dikpāla）は、サンスクリット語で「世界を守るもの」の意味で、4方位または8方位のそれぞれにあるインド神話の神々の総称である。 日本では密教として知られるヴァジラヤーナ仏教、主に時輪タントラでも、同様の捉え方である。ヴァジラヤーナ（サンスクリット語で「稲妻の乗り物」または「ダイヤモンドの乗り物」と言う意味）は、インドや周辺の国々、とりわけチベットで発展した仏教のタントラのことである。また、ローカパーラは仏教における十二天の原型とされている。 代表的な３つの区分は以下の通り： ① ローカパーラ

②ダサ−ディクパラ（Daśa-Dikpāla）世界を守る８方位と天頂（zenith ）と天底（nadir ）の２方位を追加した１０方位であるとの論争は絶えない。追加された神々は以下の通り：
ブラフマー（天頂とは「重力から最も遠い天上」の意）
ヴィシュヌ（天底とは「重力が引っ張る方向」の意）
③ナヴァ–ディクパラ（Nava-Dikpāla）８方位の真ん中にもう一人加えた世界を守る９方位の意。ジャワ島やバリヒンデゥーでは、曼荼羅・デワ ナワ サンガという：
