I think that used to be a very common problem - the idea that something was either humorous *or* serious. I think large chunks of global culture have eased away from that idea.
Yes, and that's an idea that needs to go away. I mean, even Shakespeare put comedic moments in his great dramas. Real life is a blend of seriousness and comedy, and I think most media should reflect this.

For us Doctor Who is always best as a balance between silliness/ humour, and drama. If it’s too much of one and not enough of the other we usually aren’t so keen. Never like the idea that to be ‘serious tv’ you can’t be silly or lighthearted. :)
Same here. That's one of the things that gives it life and keeps it from stagnating.
