On Man Hating
I've had a few friends tell me they wanted to join me in my my "man hating" this month. While I didn't mind that they wanted to vent about their troubles, I felt the need to tell them the sad truth: I don't hate men. And this month, I won't bitch about dudes or complain about past boyfriends or hate on anyone who is in a happy relationship. Because, frankly, that defeats the point.
I want to have fun and do things that embrace being single, and if I spend all my time being mad about men and jealous of those in relationships, it seems self-defeating and way too depressing. I'm happy that my friends have found love, and I appreciate the good guys in my life (and therefore exempt them from my fast). This is about clearing out the negativity and drama associated with having tumultuous relationships in your life.
It's like a juice cleanse โ get all the toxins out so you can start fresh and heal your body. This month, I'll be spending a good amount of time planning my sister's wedding shower and talking to my friends about their relationships, and I will be happy to do it. I'm glad when people I love are happy, and I don't resent them for having what I don't. I'm choosing this month to take a break from it all not because I hate it, and not because I hate men, but because I want to focus on myself for a change.
My friend B sent me this link, which I thought was quite relevant to both our situations right now. Sometimes we crave being with someone over being alone, even if that someone really sucks. I call bullshit.
'Do I Need to Deactivate My OkCupid Account?'
I received this question today from CC, a fast participant, and it's a valid one. Since most people are only playing along for 30 days, it may seem silly to temporarily disable their online dating profiles. But I'd highly recommend it for the following reasons.
It's a distraction.ย Even if you aren't checking it all the time, you'll likely be receiving notification e-mails and other things to remind you of dating and even the fact that you're taking a break from dating. That's not the point. The point is to take a break to focus on other things, not to obsess over what you're missing out on.
What's your motivation for keeping it active? Is it because you don't want to miss the opportunity to meet Mr. Right? If so, why are you doing this fast anyway?
By temporarily disabling your online dating profile, you are making a commitment. It may sound silly, but it's a concrete way for you to commit to a break from dating. If you just add a disclaimer on your still-active profile that says you won't be replying for 30 days, it sort of defeats the purpose of a real break.
What happens if you do meet Mr. Right? If a hottie messages you on the site during your fast, it's going to be a lot harder to keep your commitment to staying single and focusing on yourself. Why not remove the temptation and allow yourself to focus?
With that said, the rules are rules for me, and you can interpret this fast in any way you choose. This is personal, and I'm not a dictator. Do what feels right for you, but make sure your motivations are in your best interest.
