Wholesome news of the day: The girlies of tiktok have been showing off their Cyberdecks, as in working computers that are self-built with raspberry pies, and they are adorable. I've seen one in a Polly Pocket game, one that's early 2000s clear plastic pink blob tech inspired, one that's in progress built into a jewelery case, and the one that's been popping off most: in a shell purse inspired by mermaid whimsy. The girly with the shell purse deck is apparently new to making Cyberdecks and answering so many questions, so now a bunch of girls, gays and they's are getting into building Cyberdecks. I think that's so cool, because of how incredibly male-centered stem still is, if you look up Cyberdeck-videos from before 2026 they are almost exclusively men who built their decks into like, poker or tool cases. I tried becoming a woman in tech when I was about 14 and was incredibly put off by how incredibly male dominated the space is, and when I started gaming at 20 the only space I felt comfortable was the cozy gaming space. But now I'm actually thinking of using the tech knowledge I have learned as a teen and from having a dad that works in tech because right now, it feels like a friendly, supportive and open space. Right now, I feel like it's a hobby I could get into.
Hidden PCB silkscreen art

What you're looking at is a subtle artistic inside joke within the world of electrical and hardware engineering.
During the design process of PCB's, engineers have to map out the board's silkscreen (aka the nonconductive layer of apoxy ink, typically in white, black or yellow, that is used to indicate components, design, and test points). This is an essential part of circuit board building that is an integral part of the design process, serving as essentially a communicative manual to anyone servicing it, or something fun to find for teardowns. Think of it as a medical diagram to the board's meat and bones. It is layered on top of the solder mask which in turn protects the copper of the board from corrosion.
Many designers opt to put hidden messages, symbols or popculture references within the leftover/non-essential spaces as a fun way to connect them to their work. It's a piece of the artist within the art, and acts as a fun little real life easter egg to anyone brave enough to open up the tech housing it.
They don't serve any functional purpose to the board, but they sure are cool :)

I have decided to build a cyberdeck to read and write fan fiction on. Am I qualified to do this? No. Do I know how? Not yet. Can I read ao3? You bet your bottom I asked that first as well, and yes. Yes, I can. Yes, I will!
Check back in a few months to see if the hyperfixation stuck or not. 😬
The whole point of building cyberdeck is to re-use electronic components, due to all the e-waste that we have in the world. It is a device to be mostly functional— ofc you can make it pretty, nobody is stopping you. Also, it’s an anti capitalist project, nowadays we have to to pay just to go to the next song or to save 30 seconds of our lifes from an ad. It rages me seeing people BUYING EVERY SINGLE COMPONENT to build their cyberdeck bc it is “so aesthetically pleasing” and “omg is so girly and cute >u<“
I understand buying one or two pieces like a battery or the mini-computer such as a raspberry pi, but buying every single piece from AMAZON defeats the whole point.
Maybe i’m wrong idk (i’m not)
Also, sorry for the misspelling, it’s 2 am and eng is my second language.
