Beelzebub bee-eater, Mallophora leschenaulti, Asilidae (Robber Flies)
As the name suggests, this species of robber fly uses it’s bee-like mimicry to deter predators and hunt its favorite prey, bees and wasps. Found in Texas, Mexico, and Central America.

wow. WOW. fluffiest most gentle robber fly i have ever met - a mallophora! i remember seeing one at an entomology contest earlier this year and my entire team couldn’t figure out what the heck it was. but i’d been blessed today with this beautiful fluffy bee-eating monster. 13/10!

Bee killer - Mallophora fautrix
Mallophora fautrix (Diptera - Asilidae) is a species of robber flies with a very bad reputation as killers, predators, mimics and assassins. These are bee mimics and they prey upon bee, bumble bees and wasps. They can be usually recognized by their bright eyes.
Like all flies, they have no crushing mouthparts and therefore have to drink their lunch. That means for robber flies the proboscis has evolved for piercing and sucking. One stab and a cocktail of paralytic and digestive enzymes dumps into the prey so it’s easier to handle… and easier to imbibe.Â
This species occurs in Texas west to California, southward through Mexico.
