Generations past could scarcely have envisioned the world of the future, our present. Music itself has taken on gargantuan form, and we are far removed from the whimsical optimism of the first five decades of recorded sound. Everything is now larger than life, rising to the occasion of a world on the paradoxical edge of breakthrough and breakdown.

Life is a real mind bender right now, and nowhere is this plainer than on the new split by French doomers MALEMORT and CERBÉRE. Two massive tracks that are simply monstrous in every way. You don't even need the lyrics to feel each track deeply in your gut.

Malemort bring on the rage with gnarled vocals forming a soundscape of burning embers, radioactive winds, and charred remains in "Aimless." Cerbère is a dense storm of flurries in "Glace Mère" ("Mother Ice"), burying the troubled history of our planet somewhere in the not too distant future, cold winds blowing as impish doom trills. After hearing the combined effort, I was left uttering holy cow and caught myself releasing my held breath.

Epic and laden in raw human emotion, the split is out Friday on vinyl and digital formats (get it here). A must for fans of Cough and Bongripper.

SOME BUZZ

Heartbreak, gravity, and dull vibrations—it's this quest that brings together the approaches of Cerbère and Malemort. Since the meeting between the musicians of La Harelle collective (which also includes Sordide, Mòr, Void Paradigm and Iffernet) and those of Cerbère (also involved in Frank Sabbath, Ragequit and Hallebardier), the two trios have chosen to share their first vinyl, ‘Aimless / Glace Mère’.

The collaboration marks the return of Malemort's dissonant impassivity and a new incarnation of Cerbère's grimy, bitter power. It has two facets: "Aimless" stretches like an 18-minute vision of a chaotic future, to which Cerbère responds with "Glace Mère," transporting us for 16 minutes into the coldest and most acidic of landscapes. Two complementary ways of arranging low frequencies and dissonances, which unite in a bitter but dignified response to the violence of the present.

For the release of this first vinyl, the two groups have chosen to join forces with several labels from the underground and DIY scene, in which they have been playing for many years: Rope or Guillotine (Nijmegen, Netherlands); Arsenic Solaris (Lyon, France); Chien Noir (Paris, France); La Harelle (Rouen, France).

An upcoming split EP shines a spotlight on the French extreme doom underground: Malemort is a Rouen-based group who add lots of blackened atmosphere to their sludgy post metal. Cerbère is a Parisian trio who gnarl up their doom metal with the chainsaw guitar of vintage Swedish death metal. Aimless / Glace Mère will be jointly released by Rope or Guillotine, La Harelle, Arsenic Solaris, and Chien Noir on December 5th.
