Cervical Cancer Deaths will Raise Rapidly, Expert Warns.
Today is HPV Awareness Day and the International Papillomavirus Society is encouraging women worldwide to attend cervical screenings. With the restrictions caused by Covid-19 many women, understandably, didn't attend screenings or they were cancelled. Cervical cancer (HPV) can be spotted through screening and recover rates are much better the earlier it is spotted. Currently one woman dies from cervical cancer every 2 minutes. Sadly, 86% of cervical cancers occur in developing countries and this can have devastating effects. The largest amount of cases annually come from sub-Saharan Africa where less that 5% of women are currently screened. In the western/developed world cervical screening has long been a part of all women's standard preventative healthcare. Doctors and insurance companies typically include the service annually which has lead to a large reduction of final stage diagnosis. Covid-19 screening and treatment has caused severe pressure on many health services worldwide and this has lead to a reduction of screening services from 70% to 30-40%. Ongoing fears over Covid-19 and treatments in hospitals and clinics means women are now 32% more unlikely to attend appointments. Professor Margaret Stanley, President of the International Papillomavirus Society, said, "It's unfathomable that there is such inequality in the roll-out of crucial, inexpensive medical care. Young women are missing vital appointments now which could be fatal. Read the full article
Found this wonderful lot @truecancerbodies a little while ago and seeing how they are changing the way we relate to cancer and it's affects. So I shared my story so that it might help me and others in the telling. Pls go check them out!! #Repost @truecancerbodies with @get_repost ・・・ Written by George aka @tagg_family I just wanted to deal with it as quietly as possible. “It” being a diagnosis of papillary carcinoma - one of four types of thyroid cancer. As the consultant explained, "If you were to go buy a cancer, this is the one to have." I laughed. Hearing the diagnosis was easy, telling my kids was far harder. They listened & asked questions. Together with my wife, helped me stay strong during my treatment. I owe my life to a pair of converse trainers…lovely crisp white leather ones, which caused me some serious Achilles tendon issues. So I went to the doctor. Thankfully I got a great doctor who told me that the shoes were shit & seeing as we were getting on so well, I asked her to “feel my lumps”. So she did & sent me for tests. I was on holiday in Portugal when my phone rang, a UK number. The doctor explained who she was & asked if I was free to talk, I said where I was & she replied, “oh sorry, don’t want to spoil your holiday.” Too late!! I had my thyroid removed in August 2017 (with a slightly scary stay in intensive care), with a second op in October 2018 to remove 47 lymph nodes & two more lumps. The consultant blended the two scars into one, and two lots of radioiodine. I feel my scar all the time & there is some pain, but it’s not going to stop me. I play footy, exercise (30-day press-up challenge currently) & I just got a bike. I have been cared for by some amazing people in the NHS, my MacMillan nurses & my gorgeous family & friends. The stories on True Cancer Bodies are inspiring, brave. I love how True Cancer Bodies is helping to change the conversation around cancer & what it looks like, so I wanted to be part of something that is an empowering community that are supporting people to live. Occasionally I’ll catch someone staring at my scar. I’m lucky, I F**KING LOVE my scar! #malecancer #cancerlads #truecancerbodies #thyroidca https://www.instagram.com/p/B0DEFt4lu0Ga_3W-qsf7SX12pN5lZk7M53ZbvQ0/?igshid=is2lvrxidqpg
