Malcolm Wallace does not like to go into any details about the break-up of his first marriage, but he does remember with perfect clarity the events of one of the worst days in his life, and the reaction of his old friend the Princess Royal. âWhen my wife left me and drove out of the house with the children - obviously not the happiest day of my life - the first person to phone me was Princess Anne. I was sitting in the kitchen, wondering what the hell to do, when she rang me and spoke to me for an hour and a quarter. It was the nicest thing that anyone could have done at the time. I was very appreciative then and I still am. It was the action of a true friend. Shortly afterwards she asked me to go and stay at Gatcombe and, without interfering in any way, she let me unwind. She was there if I needed her. Thatâs her style.â
