There was nothing wrong that night. Lydia knew it. She was sure of it. It wasn’t like she and Stiles had had a bad breakup. They hadn’t. Stiles hadn’t cheated or been a bad boyfriend. He was a good boyfriend. Just not for her. She was the problem. Well, not really a problem. She just didn’t like boys. At least not in a romantic way. She had dated several boys in high school, and during those times, Lydia was certain she knew what love was. And every time she found herself entangled in a new romance, she believed she was gathering more and more knowledge about what it truly meant to love someone, and how to navigate her way out of heartbreak.
Lydia had succeeded every time.
But not with Stiles.
Stiles had truly changed her perception of love. When she met him, he was just an awkward kid on the school lacrosse team, hadn’t been on her radar, but had been brave enough to ask her out anyway. Lydia didn’t believe this date would go anywhere, but she wanted to know what Stiles would do to win her over. He was funny and smart, and he always seemed to admire the things she said, paying attention to her words and always praising her intelligence. This surprised her. She wasn’t used to boys who cared about more than her appearance. They were nice and kind, but Lydia always felt like she invested much more in relationships than the boys. And that was why, eventually, she broke up with all of them.
Stiles was a pleasant surprise. When they first started dating, she believed she was deeply and completely in love with him. She believed he was the missing piece in her life, the one who made Lydia feel complete. He was protective, affectionate, romantic, and caring. He did everything to make her happy. Something she’d never truly had. In Stiles, Lydia had finally found love. And that was probably why the breakup had been so difficult. She might not have loved him romantically in all that time, but she still truly loved him. They built something. From nothing to a fort made just for them, far from the rest of the world, protected in a world only they knew, where Lydia felt safe. Saying goodbye was difficult and painful. And trying to be just friends still wasn’t working out as she’d planned.
