“Remand To Hospital Opposed By Counsel,” Toronto Star. March 13, 1931. Page 02. ----- L. V. McBrady Describes Such Procedure as ‘Monkey Business’ ----- An order by Magistrate Patterson in women’s court to-day that Lillian Downing, alias Mary Downing, alleged vagrant, be remanded to the psychiatric hospital for a week brought a strong protest from K. V. McBrady, K.C.. He said accused had a place of residence, a job, and was willing to work.
‘Oh, this monkey business for remanding people to hospitals to have their heads examined!’ ejaculated counsel. ‘I am objecting to this confounded business. Citizens have lawful rights, and no one had a right to arrest this girl on a vagrancy charge.
‘There are a number of people outside the psychiatric hospital who ought to have their heads examined. I am sorry to make this remark, but to my mind this is not proper disposition of the case.’
‘That is all right, Mr. McBrady, but that is my disposition of the case,’ said the bench. Accused had pleaded not guilty.

“Director of Hospitals In Charge at London After Two Dismissals,” The Globe and Mail. September 19, 1938. Page 04. ---- St. Thomas Lawyer Whose Complaint Started Probe of Mental Institution To Be Witness ---- London, Ont., Sept. 18. (CP). - Dr. R. C. Montgomery, Director of Hospitals for Ontario, was in charge of the Ontario Hospital here tonight following the suspension of two senior officers of the mental institution.
Suspension of Dr. J. R. McGeoch, Acting Superintendent of the Hospital, was announced at Toronto Saturday by Hon. Harold J. Kirby, Health Minister. he had taken the place of Dr G. W. Stevenson as superintendent who was suspended earlier this month when a Royal Commission investigation into the conduct of Ontario’s mental hospitals was ordered.
Sittings of the Commission will be resumed at the recreation hall of the hospital here at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. First witness scheduled to be called is John R. Green, St. Thomas lawyer, whose complaint that he was detained wrongfully for almost three years in the local institution, led to the inquiry.
Members of the Commission, headed by Clifford R. Magone of the attorney-genera’s department and including Lionel Conahcer, Liberal member of the Legislature for Torono Brancondale; and Dr. W. H. Avery, Toronto physician, returned to Toronto for the week-end but were expected back tomorrow morning.
Dr. McGeogh’s suspension came after a Friday sitting of the Commission during which disclosure was made that the acting superintendent released hospital records to Dr. Stevenson after the latter’s suspension.
