It’s all Zuko’s fault. Running off, leaving her a crumby, awkward, horribly endearing letter explaining what the hell he thought he was doing, only to leave her behind at Boiling Rock again. Azula would surely have had her locked away forever, if not killed outright, if Mai hadn’t acted faster.

“Can I have some more wine?”

Ozai took the goblet from Mai’s hand before passing it to a nearby servant who refilled it before handing it back to the fire lord who returned it to her.

“Is that acceptable?”

“Yes, thank you.”

“Anything else you need?”

“I think I’m doing well for the moment.”

Ozai gave a nod before the two returned to dinner, Mai seated at Ozai’s right side while Azula seethed to the left. Mai pressed her shoulder against the fire lord’s arm, saw the corner of his mouth curl into a smirk and heard Azula inhale sharply.

There's this thing about Zuko's girlfriends "upgrading" to Ozai that I personally just dig. I guess it's about the taboos, the fact that Zuko gets upstaged by his own father, along with the age difference and all. It's what makes the ship spicy.
