The importance of maintenance has become top priority in these last couple months, how to wash hands, for how long, how to cough, how frequently you need to be washing, to separate from people, to distance so as to not cross contaminate households. The need for cleaners has doubled, and those at the bottom, on lower salaries and zero contract hours are not taken care of from the governments, lacking in sick pay, if they fall ill many will continue to work because they cannot afford not to. If they do mention their illness, they’re shifts are deleted and given to someone else. If there is sick pay, often it’s not enough, “Our members cannot afford to self-isolate on £18 a day,” says Lola McEvoy, a GMB union organiser for the NHS. “They’re treating the cleaners as if they are the lowest people in the company, like pawns, just throwing them out onto the battlefield.” the conclusion of this particular article is to demand that companies put their workers first over profits and show some humanity. Cleaners and Refuse collectors are some of the most vulnerable in pay, miscommunication and yet they are the ones, once again, upholding our worlds, making the most efforts into eradicating the spread of the virus.
