Mavuika in my redesign. I've made her more ancient. Mavuika is a direct reference to the goddess Mahuika from the Maori people, you can read about her, it's interesting.

There is no way you are west African and native/indigenous American AND Polynesian and raised immersed in all cultures. You literally cannot speak for every culture Natlan is misrepresenting.
Natlan makes Māori gods white. Natlan makes Mayan gods white. Natlan makes Nigerian gods EXTREMELY pale.
Hoyoverse characters should have diversity but if hoyo is soooo against making brown characters why even make nations based off brown countries? At least then the complaints would be for a lack of representation and not out right racism/colourism. It’s so malicious.
I was so excited for natlan but when I saw the designs.. mavuika was just the final nail in the coffin
So I decided to take matters into my own hand and make mavuika look like her role in the story, so u can actually guess who she is just based on her design you know, how you're supposed to in the first place? I kinda want to do the rest of the natlan cast cause a lot of people really hate natlan and sometimes it feels kinda racist, idk. The writing and char design sucked so I get it but I can only imagine how peak it could have been had mihoyo not sucked
She is inspired by Aztec god Xipe Totec, who is a god of agriculture, healing and death. Another deity who is reflected in her design is Mahuika, a mahori goddess of fire. I tried to put in many aspects of these two gods and their culture while giving her a more warrior type esc outfit which reflects her humanity with the bright colors.
And while I have a LOT of problems with her og design, the fire hair is the best part of her

HFD culture week folklore and fairy tales: Mahuika and her fingernails of fire
Here’s NZ as Māui with the Māori goddess of fire, Mahuika for HFD’s culture week! (Design by Peter Gossage) And yep, her fingernails are made of fire.

To quickly summarise the story, Māui borrows some fingernails of fire for his village, but while doing so, he “drops” them into a nearby stream to see where Mahuika would get her fire. This in turn enraged Mahuika, prompting her to throw the rest of her fingernails and toenails at Māui which creates a forestfire. His ancestor, Tāwhirimātea, the god of weather puts out the fire, and some of the powers of the fingernails latched themselves into some trees. (Mahoe trees, Tōtara trees, Patete trees, Pukatea trees, and Kaikōmako trees, all trees in which the Māori use to make fire) Māui finds out that he could make fire from the wood of these trees, and so he brings them back to his village to use as firewood.
