genuinely just ugly with no excuse
"Any advice for me?" Slate asked. He and Mahlon were both sitting in a back room in the justice building of District Eleven. Everyone else was busying themselves with something, prepping for his speech in some way -- but he had no energy to bustle around like them. Plus, the Peacekeeper shadows were eerier when he was moving than when he was still. When he was still, they were still. He could pretend they weren't even there. "Better yet, any liquid courage I could borrow? Or powder. Intravenous -- don't care."

It was a very strange thing to be in the headquarters of a brand new regime. Gage hadn't chosen the location for herself - hadn't chosen anything since her decision at the reaping to save Wiley - but she was grateful for it, and grateful for her life, nonetheless. The air was full of excitement and hope in a way she had never seen before. Never in District Six had there been this many genuine smiles, and in the Tower previously everyone had been miserable with worry over the Arena.
Gage wondered idly if she might move out of Six, to somewhere she might never have to see snow again. She entertained this thought for just a moment before she threw it away. A new regime didn't mean everything was different. There were still districts. There was still her home. And Wiley's home.
Gage had asked Wiley to move in with her, when they got back. Wiley had agreed. It would be a strange arrangement, but then, everything was strange these days. Wiley was too old to be her daughter but there wasn't another word for where Wiley had landed in her life the past few weeks.
And then there was the man who had stabbed her daughter, or whatever Wiley might be, in the abdomen, and left her to die.
He'd been injured. A coma, so the rumor went, and just woken up in the past few days. Gage thought a visit was in order. The tributes who survived would all have to live with what they'd done, or what they hadn't.
She checked in with the nurse, and then knocked on his door.
"Hello, Mahlon," she said as she stood waiting in the doorway.

Her shift was over and she had nowhere to go, so Denver found herself on the roof. She hadn't been here last time - it was too cold for that, there was always something immediate to see or do that took precedent before she had to leave. Well, she wasn't leaving now.
She sighed, sitting on a bench and staring out at the view. It was a beautiful view. You could see the entire city from the tribute tower - when they'd built it, they ensured no other building would be built higher. The mountains in the distance reminded her, as they sometimes did, of the tribute from last Games, Farina, who she had almost sort of could have been friends with, had she lived, and Denver felt the familiar pang in her heart because of it.
Footsteps approached, surprising Denver, and she whipped her head around to see who it was, tense and ready to flee if it was a Peacekeeper and it turned out she wasn't supposed to be here after all.

"Well I'll admit, you've certainly looked better," Everett said, spotting Mahlon with a black eye and desperately needing to know more. It was Mahlon, so it wasn't difficult to imagine that he'd crossed someone he shouldn't have.

"McCreary."
The word was too sharp to drip from her lips. It spat, shards of vitriol lancing the air as Mahlon paused in the doorway.
Cress was too round to hinge one leg over the other, to perch herself above, where the vantage point was better, where she could properly observe him -- small, spineless creature he was. Instead, she was seated on the end of the bed, hands behind, heels of her palms pressing into the mattress.
"Wrong room," Mahlon replied dryly, but it was there: the minute warble, the subtle tell.
"Oh, no," Cress clucked. "You're just the person I was looking for."

Did you know Blue Jays are actually in the same family as Crows, Ravens, and Magpies? Because I didn’t up until two years ago.
