maglorath tidbit: Cirdan's spent the past few thousand years wandering around the Mediterranean. he can't leave until Maglor (hermit, soundly ignoring the cry of the gull) and Daeron (even more hermit, too far inland to hear the gulls) do, so for now he's just hanging out in france. he speaks a bizarre hybrid of french, italian, latin, falathrin sindarin, and ilkorin; Maglor and Daeron avoid talking to him partially because of the offense to their linguist senses

i ended up frankensteining together the maps of middle earth & beleriand using the ered luin as a guide + an edited bit of the fonstad ered engrin/angband map based on 150 leagues on the lotr map's scale + europe map overlay using the lotr map for scale and aligning southwest england with lothlann/the march of maedhros.
certain places are fudged a bit (see: ireland being sideways tol fuin, because i couldn't figure out where else tol fuin would end up) and most of the mountain ranges don't line up
some highlights i noticed looking at the map:
utumno is in the bay of forochel/off the coast of denmark
ireland is sideways tol fuin
the iberian peninsula is ossiriand
mordor (and gondor) are in the middle of the mediterranean
the black sea is the sea of rhun
the netherlands sea reclamation is built over the gate of utumno
mirkwood is the ex yugoslavia region
erebor is in the corner of ukraine
carn dum is right on top of (underneath?) nuremburg
rome is in dunland
oddly enough the 3 decade volcanoes in the region match up fairly well with actual mountains on the map
mt vesuvius is methedras (the last mountain of the misty mountains)
mt etna is starkhorn (the mountain right behind edoras)
the santorini caldera is mt. doom
eriador is mostly france and parts of germany
the southern french border matches pretty cleanly to the aligned western middle earth coast, and half the south french coast follows the baranduin
the seine is a branch of the Lune
and thanks to @quantumelfdynamics, @mae-it-be-an-evening-dhros, and @enbymetalhead for the british geography advice!
@who-needs-words @overlord-of-fantasy i just watched eps 7 & 8 of maul shadow lord - i dont want to spoil it if you havent watched it/arent planning on it but that last episode just whacked me in the face with Brother Tragedies
and at the same time i'm writing maglorath again & am currently on the parts where maglor's going out to himring because he doesn't know where else to go. and just like feanor poured his fea into the silmarils and maglor into the noldolante, there's a bit of nelyo lingering in the old fortress. and so now he's having a full chapter of Brother Tragedies
anyways i am beset on all sides and i do not know how i shall recover from this

Farther down the French coast, a shipwright rose among the ashes of his domain, star-forged spear in hand, swan-helm set with pearls and silver mantle woven on the looms of Melian in Doriath of old. Before him an ancient dragon landed heavy among the wood-ash and twisted steel, clad all in golden scales and wings wrought of dark Shadow. Starlight filtered through the fog of Shadow, bathing the white sand in faint light just as it had Ages ago at Lake Cuivienen.
Cirdan's first appearance in the Maglorath, featuring a demonstration of appropriate eye protection when battling a certain hypnotic dragon.
