maglorath tidbit: Cirdan's spent the past few thousand years wandering around the Mediterranean. he can't leave until Maglor (hermit, soundly ignoring the cry of the gull) and Daeron (even more hermit, too far inland to hear the gulls) do, so for now he's just hanging out in france. he speaks a bizarre hybrid of french, italian, latin, falathrin sindarin, and ilkorin; Maglor and Daeron avoid talking to him partially because of the offense to their linguist senses
#silm#silmarillion#maglorath#cirdan#maglor#daeron#currently cirdan speaks mostly french with latin grammar + cuivienen-era ilkorin idioms translated literally into italian#+ latin slang from his few centuries in rome + random sindarin words just thrown in there#crucially he is capable of speaking normal-ish modern-ish french in his everyday life! but when speaking to maglor and/or daeron#he just assumes they understand what has been dubbed the Cirdan Dialect and therefore doesnt bother to sort out what language is from#which Age like he does when talking to the Men. hes just too old to care at this point#also crucially both maglor and daeron *can* kind of understand him#but it's a massive pain figuring out what he's saying#in the very few years across the past Ages in which one of them is in contact w cirdan#maglor is split between wanting to study him and asking him to please just stick to sindarin i was still wandering the shores during#the roman republic and i don't get any of your references ;-;#daeron barely speaks english let alone french/italian/latin/whatever else cirdan threw in there#he did however come up with a new script specifically for adapting cirdan's mess of languages into something readable#and just avoids verbal conversation
