where he grew up it rarely snowed, being north of what is now called the waking sea. the first time he remembers seeing a snowflake he mistook it for a friend of his, a spirit of joy, who often chooses the shape of inanimate things (balls of light, bubbles). of course, he quickly realised his mistake, and in a way the mistake proved prophetic as without joy he likely would see as dangerous rather than appreciating it as he does.

it was fascinating how the world changed after a snowfall. even when he was young, the world wasn’t, and every tree and river had its story, which it told to anyone who listened closely enough. snow was new, and in the first fresh few hours of the day, it was fascinating hearing something that had no story.

it wasn’t long before it showed its ages, with dirt tracks lining the paths of the others that lived in his village, but sometimes it was gone almost as soon as it came. this itself was unique for him, to find something so impermanent in a world that seemed unending
