Witchtober Day 12: Garden Witch
The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul. ā Alfred Austin
Thanks to my aunt and grandmaās hard work, we have a lovely garden that I was able to use for this charming witch shoot with @eponatenjouproductions.
Minute Bat
Minute Bats are magical constructs whose origin varies depending on your campaign setting, however, they are typically sentries in charge of protecting the household of higher undead such as vampires and lich. They get their name from their Countdown ability, which spells out doom for their victim after a single minute.Ā
A Minute Bat will typically lie still within their master's home, specifically in spots where they blend in as just another wicked-looking ornament. They wait for intruders to walk within their ability's range, and even after binding to them, they'll remain in place unless threatened.
If attacked, a Minute Bat will try to keep an airborneĀ distance of around 15 feet from their target, enough to stay out of harms way, yet not have their link severed by a fleeing victim moving beyond its maximum range. Otherwise, if the location allows for it, they will hide behind columns, tables, chairs, or other furniture, although they will avoid bringing danger to any their master's most prized possessions if they happen to be present in the room.
From their still position, they will rarely go after someone who managed to somehow pass by them without stepping within range, unless they have instructions to explicitly do so. All in all, they are usually just one of many layers of protection the wicked might have in their home, and one that is meant to be more passive than aggressive. Self; The craftsmanship put into it and the danger in acquiring an unbroken one makes them sought after by collectors. Otherwise, shattered ones are worth the value of their significant materials, which are usually 2 tiny rubies and 5 pounds rare metals.
Suspicious Appearance
Any successful observation (difficulty: C) done on the Minute Bat reveals one peculiar detail about the Minute Bat. It is brought to the attention of the player that the liquid it contains is found at the top of the hourglass rather than the bottom, unaffected by gravity. Whether that observation alerts the player to the Minute Bat's potential danger (before its effects commence, of course) remains to be seen, but at the very least, it becomes a curiosity that the character is aware of.
Sense Life
A Minute Bat can sense living creatures within 40ft. of it, also being able to feel their exact location.
Countdown
If a living creature of any kind has passed within 5ft. of a Minute Bat, this nefarious hourglass may attempt to bind itself to the being's soul. Their target makes a willpower or similar resistance roll (difficulty: A), which, if failed, means the Minute Bat has successfully bound to them.
From this point onward, the blood within its hourglass starts pouring down from the top chamber to its lower one, signalling the start of the Countdown effect: a slow draining of the targetās life force, the flow of blood representing the time left before their doom.
The victim has exactly a single minute to either destroy the Minute Bat or find a way to sever their connection to it before dying, with every passing turn, loosing 1/6 of their total HP. This link between them will only remain active as long as both are within 40 feet from each other. If at any point the effect is interrupted, such as by stepping out of the Minute Bat's range, the victim is freed from the bind and the Countdownās effect, although this does not return any amount of health drained.
Countdown is considered a magical effect, and as such can be affected by the usual things that affect magic.
Turning the Minute Bat upside down will not affect the bloodās flow or the time left it represents. In such a case, the blood can simply be seen continuing to flow upwards against the laws of physics.
A Minute Bat whose glass shatters may not use Countdown and typically flees. Only one Minute Bat can be bound to the same target at a time, and a Minute Bat may only bind itself to a single target at a time.
The effects of Countdown will only work on constructs, androids, or similar lifeforms if and only if your setting considers these types of beings to have some sort of āsoulā, even if it is of a different nature from that of other living beings (for example, a setting that establishes that once an AI is advanced enough, it forms or harbors a type of consciousness and vital force which can be affected and interacted with in a similar way that the soul of a biological being can).
Construct Traits
Minute Bats have the miscellaneous properties that Constructs of a similar composition typically have. For example, immunity to disease, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, etc.
Look Taako, I did it!
Probably my favorite photo I took. I edited it slightly and Iām really happy with it.

Tutorial : Magic effect
It would be best to read it on the blog instead of the dashboard. So, I've done this tutorial before, but as I never saved it on my computer, I am bound to write it again. Behold! this is the way to give a « magic » effect on your avatars (or gifs, icons whatever.. as long as it is a picture). I'd like to say that this is only my way to do it, I'm sure there are other people who did the tutorial too. So I'm not crediting myself, just the writing part. So before we start here, there are some important informations you need to know: .1 Not claiming I did this first. .2 The ressources I used for the magic effect are here : Octomoosey ( I personally use the first two and the last two.) & texture gifs. Thank you both for making such great textures ! (The snow flakes gifs are great to use!) .3 If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. .4 Thank you to the anon who found the perfect name to this kind of effect ! ℠.5 So, my CS5 is in french but I'll translated the word you need, don't worry. And now, let's get started ! First of all, you have to open animation if it isn't yet. Go to window > animation Once you have the perfect avatar open (as you can see I choose Gemma Arterton, her position and blury background are ideal for the magic effect), drag the avatar on the gifs. don't touch or click anywhere else after, because you have to select all the pictures of the gif. So first, click on the first picture then press shift and click on the last pics. They should all be in blue, just like in the screencap below. If you didn't cut the gif to the size 200x320 before, then you have to do it now, but first find the pefect spot for the picture. You have to change the blend mode of your avatar (don't forget to select you avatar before changing the blend mode!). Here are your to choices : .1 Use the Lighten mode if your avatar is dark. Layers > lighten (éclaircir). .2 Use the screen mode if your avatar is light. Layers > screen (superposition). But with screen mode, it'll make the picture brighter and you will lose some details. The best thing is to create a curve, dark enough to reveal again the details. Bottom right, click on the round half white, half black button (it's called « create a filling layer », something like that) > curves. You're almost done ! Now you have to save it. Go to files > Save for web. (Alt + Maj + Ctrl +S) Now don't go too fast ! You might miss something. Once you clicked, a widow is open. Make sure that the quality is on bicubic and that the option for the loop is on always. Really don't forget this two because you're avatar will only move once and then stay still. And voilà  ! You have now an awesome avatar ready to be used ! Again if you have question feel free to ask, I might do a FAQ if needed. Have fun with this tutorial, hope it'll help you !
