Maggie’s Plan
Quirky (sorry, I did use that word) love-triangle comedy. Maggie has decided to take matters into her own control and have a child by herself. She then finds herself splitting up a marriage and finding the father for her child. But, that plan doesn’t work out and she needs to reunite her partner with his ex (the always wonderful Julianne Moore).
Maggie’s Plan, recommended
In spite of a really unpromising first minute of movie, and the fact that I’m not sure it passes any diversity or Bechdel related tests, Maggie’s Plan has rare qualities:
- It allows for some time to reflect upon such things, without missing the beat of Greta Gerwig’s stream of thought and action.
- Maya fucking Rudolph.
- Ethan Hawke embraces his inner idiot and somehow turns into a human.
- Mistakes are dealt with honestly.
- And most importantly, the best, gasp-inducing freaking cameo I’ve seen in a long while.
