It wasn’t a secret Artemis hated cars. To her, they were just big, dangerous hunks of metal. Even more dangerous when they zoom past each other, inches away from crashing. She always walked, or caught a train, anything to escape the hellish vehicle. 

Though, there she is. Sitting in a car. Next to Madison. 

Her shoulders are tense, and her stiff stance doesn’t budge when the turn some of the sharpest corners. Her eyes stay straightforward as she listens to Madison jabber away about whatever she pleases. Although she wasn’t the safest driver, Artemis trusted she wouldn’t do anything rash.

“And I was like who even does that? They were the ones who told me to put the paper in the cabinet.” Madison groaned, gripping the steering wheel hard. Artemis snorts, but something catches her eyes. A car, speeding towards them. 

“Madison,” She warns.

“They didn’t even apologise! Gah, they infuriate me-”

“Madison!” Artemis shouts, the colour drains from her face. She’s going to be sick.

“Oh my gosh!” Madison spins the wheel as fast as she could, narrowly missing the car, and briefly, Artemis is in the past. She sees fire as Madison slams the breaks, stopping on the side. “It’s lucky you saw that, we would’ve been toast.”

Artemis didn’t reply.

“Shit! Um... Lets get you out of the car.” Madison fusses, clicking Artemis’s seat belt off. She shoots out of her own seat, and rushes to the other side to pull her out. 

Artemis gasps for air, but nothing seems to be going in. Her shaking hands reach for something grasp, to lean on, settling on the rail on the roadside. Madison steps next to her, placing her hand gently on Artemis’s back. Her breath hitches for a moment, then starts to slows.

“Just breathe. Like that. That’s it.” Madison whispers, turning Artemis to face her. “Are you okay?

“Yeah. I-I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry,” Madison pouts in thought. “Why don’t we walk the rest of the way?”

“Sounds great.”
