I have said it before and I'll say it again.
In terms of weird Star Wars viewing order, the Machete order doesn't go far enough.
Lucas is oft quoted as saying that Star Wars is "like poetry, it rhymes". Put that to the test with my viewing order:
1, 4, 7, 2, 5, 8, 3, 6, 9.
Mental right? But think about it. You've got three storylines happening in tandem, each partly answering questions but not fully, so each new episode still teases the next.
Phantom Menace - Oh this Anakin kid seems nice, he's a pretty impressive kid. Obi-wan is great.
A New Hope - Oh Anakin had a son? Cool. Hey Obi-wan! Oh man, Anakin got killed by Darth Vader? That's devastating.
The Force Awakens - Woah, a whole bunch of new characters. The Empire got destroyed but came back? Shit Leia's Dad was Darth Vader? That must have fucked up Luke. Han's old now. Fuck he DIES? Hey Luke is there! He does become a jedi! But why is he hiding in the middle of nowhere?
Attack of the Clones - It's cool seeing everyone grow up. Oooh I guess Padme must be Luke's mum. Wait are those Storm troopers? What the hell, how do they become evil?
Empire Strikes Back - Looks like that Darth Sidious guy is the Emperor now. Holy shit, Yoda's still alive. Hey wait, is that Jango Fett's son? WHAT THE FUCK, ANAKIN IS VADER!? So Leia is Luke's sister?
The Last Jedi - Oh wow, things when bad for Luke. Yoda's dead now? Jeez dropping like flies...
Revenge of the Sith - Oh god, I'm seeing it happen. But everything's coming together.
PALPATINE IS DARTH SIDIOUS!? JESUS CHRIST.
Return of the Jedi - Luke did it! He redeemed his dad and Anakin brought balance at last!
Rise of Skywalker - Somehow Palpatine's returned.
Visually and thematically each beginning, middle, and end syncs up in a lot of ways too. I just think it would be fun to try some time.
