Clachan Duich burial ground
Surrounded on all sides by the Hills of Kintail this wee ruined Kirk and it's graveyard are the perfect place to stop on the A87 on the way to Eilean Donan Castle. Although the entire place is of great interest; located in the centre of the cemetry you will find a small area enclosed by a stout hedge, and this is where you discover the final resting place of Colonel John MacRae Gilstrap and his wife Isabella . Who? I hear some of you you say! Well if it wasn't the The Colonel contesting a rival claim to take on the chiefship of the Clan MacRae in 1912 perhaps the Macrae stronghold of Eilean Donan Castle on Loch Duich would still be cut off from the mainland and lie in ruins. When he purchased the Castle in 1912 he became the first MacRae for many years to hold land in the traditional clan territory of Kintail and rebuilt the castle after the great war taking 13 years to finish it.
