Surprisingly, a new Macgyver wip this time. A new Magic Mac to be precise, because I've really missed playing in this AU and because Anguish dangles such good whumpy ideas in front of me.
âMac! Open your eyes. Now, Mac! Rise and shine, soldier!â
Mac lets out a pitiful whimper, his head tossing on the pillow as he haphazardly swipes at Jackâs hand. But itâs nowhere near what Jack needs. He needs eyes open. He needs Mac to hear him. Understand him. To act on his words. Heâs asking for the impossible from Mac right now, and Jack knows it, knows it as his heart breaks to have to ask.

I've got nothing with 'mimic' for Word Game Wednesday but here's a snippet of what I was working on tonight instead. A discussion earlier in the week made me open my Magic Mac wip I started nearly a year ago, and I've made some good progress on it. Worked out a few kinks in the plot and got my writing mojo back. It's currently at 23.5k and I think it might even hit 30k before I'm done. But hopefully won't be long before I can post the next chapter!
âI canât really put my finger on it, Iâm not talking about how focused he is on his training with Flint, I kinda get that, Macâs never had a mentor for his magic before. Itâs⌠like he doesnât think weâll get it, so heâs keeping us at arms length.â Bozer said. âHe did that when he first moved in with us, heâd always kept it hidden before, he didnât know how to explain it to us and part of him feared rejection too, so he just kept that part of himself held back for so long.â
âHowâd you get him to stop?â
Bozer shrugged. âOnly thing we could do, just kept being there for him until he was ready. Nothing special, no intervention or anything, just made sure he knew he was loved no matter what.â
âTrust me, Bozer. Thatâs very special.â Jack replied, with a small smile. Maybe thatâs all they needed to do now, give Mac some time and make sure he knew he could talk to them when he was ready.

Thereâs been rumours of a new, mysterious and powerful magic user working for The Old Ones. Â Theyâre whispers really, more like propaganda than anything real, until Mac is attacked on a mission and experiences first hand what they are capable of and its devastating impact on Jack.
A subtle shift in the air is the only warning Mac gets.
The hairs on the back of his neck tingle, like someone is watching him but he doesnât have any time to react before a punch of magical energy hits between his shoulders, driving the air from his lungs.
Summary: Mac has the opportunity to learn from a new mentor, but while he discovers new abilities and control with his magic, will there be a price to pay for it? Â Set in my Mac has magic universe but stands alone.
Chapter two now posted
Flint summoned a fire in his hand, making it flare dramatically before letting the flame settle in his palm.âWhat do you want me to do?â Mac asked, he could summon fire too, but somehow he didnât think that was what Flint wanted him to do.âStop me.â Flint said with a quirk of his lips.

Written for @macgyvercairo Cairo Week Day 1 for the image prompt.
Set in my Mac has Magic universe during the Sandbox era but this stands alone, all you need to know is that Mac has magic, Jack knows, and magic users are banned from military service so Mac has to keep the magic secret.

âAre you going to tell me why weâre here, now?â Â Mac asked as Jack cut the engine after going off-road and driving to this secluded area with nothing but a cryptic âyouâll see.â
âHow many of those things have you made this last week?â Â Jack replied with his own question, shifting in his seat and nodding at the paper clip sculpture starting to take shape in Macâs hands.
Mac bit his lip, closing his fist self-consciously over the metal. Â Jack had never acted like it bothered him before. Â âI dunno.â Â He replied with a shrug. Â Except he did know, heâd gone through two large boxes in as many days, he just didnât want to admit it.
âWell, I do, a lot. Â And I know you use your magic to help bend the things into impossible shapes and I also know you do that partly because you need to bleed off your excess magic when you havenât been able to use it in a while.â Â Jack paused, his voice softening. Â âI know thatâs gotta suck, having to keep it hidden all the time.â
âYeah.â It was all Mac could manage past the lump in his throat. He knew Jack was observant, scarily so sometimes, but heâd never realised Jack paid so much attention to him. That he even cared that much. Â No one had ever noticed before how he used his magic to complete some of the more trickier designs and how he used it to siphon off his magic, to stop it from boiling over and slipping out accidentally.
âSo,â Â Jack gestured to the empty view out the windscreen, âainât nobody gonna see you here, have at it, do your thing.â Â Jack finished, wiggling his fingers, his own shorthand for Macâs magic.
Mac stared, barely moving, still trying to process that a man whoâd had him in a headlock when theyâd first met just a few months ago, now cared enough to find a space free from prying eyes, safe for Macâs magic to be let loose.
âWhat?â Â Jack asked, his self confidence at his surprise for Mac fading from his eyes.
âNothing man, just⌠no oneâs ever noticed before, I, uh⌠thanks.â  Mac slipped the paper clip he was still holding into a pocket.
âYouâre welcome.â Jack said sincerely, as if he knew how much this meant to Mac.
Mac stepped out and walked to the front of the humvee, barely holding back an eager smile as he dropped to a crouch and placed his hands on the ground, his fingertips digging into the sandy soil. Â He closed his eyes, trusting Jack to watch his back and dropped the barriers around his magic on a long exhale. Â Like a coiled spring finally allowed to stretch, his magic burst free and although Mac channelled it into the ground, the air still tingled with a static charge.
Standing, he opened his eyes, lifting a layer of dust as he rose that he sent spiralling into a whirl. Â With a twist of his hands, the dust settled into a shape of a horse, complete with the form of a cowboy twirling a lasso, eliciting a chuckle from behind him. Â The horse did a lap around them before rearing up on his back legs, triumphant and blowing away on the wind. Â Reaching out again, he focused on the ground, on every seed lying dormant and poured energy into them until bright bushy green foliage erupted all around them, turning the area lush and filling the air with the smell of cut grass.
âDamn, kid.â Jack sounded proud and Mac glanced back to see awe in his eyes.
Smiling, Macâs eyes glistened gold and flowers burst into bloom all around as he summoned colourful sparklers in the air. Â Popping off tiny bangs of colour, and showering them both with sparks. Â It was beautiful and fun and a thousand miles from the destruction and pain they saw every day. Â But it was also a risky thing to do, even in the middle of nowhere and Mac reluctantly stopped the mini explosions with a satisfied sigh and a roll of his shoulders. Â That had felt good. Â His magic felt settled now, no longer a swollen river threatening to break the banks.
âYou done?â Jack asked.
âYeah, Iâm done.â Â Mac said, turning to return to the humvee.
âYou gonna clear that up then?â Â Jack gestured around them with amusement, it was more than a little suspicious, the little oasis Mac had created.
With a fond eye roll, Mac casually glanced back, the plants disappearing in a puff of fire and smoke. Â And as he walked past Jack he fished out his paper clip from his pocket, his magic quickly extending and manipulating the length of silver metal into a cowboy on a horse before handing it over.
âThanks, Jack.â

Set in my Mac has magic universe but again, this stands alone.
Read on AO3 or under the cut
Macâs skin was prickling, the itch of his magic just under the surface, and he was hot. Â Baking in the Cairo heat, burning in the Afghanistan desert, blistering in the scorching sun, hot. He rolled his head on the ground, his throbbing head aching in a repetitive beat. Â His magic churned in warning, leaving an uneasy feeling in his gut.
Someone moved in front of him, asking him a question before shining a bright light in his face and Mac jerked his head away, screwing his eyes shut with a groan. Â Damn, was this some kind of interrogation? Â He could hear some kind of conversation going on around him, but the voices didnât make sense, fading in and out, sounding familiar yet incomprehensible. Â He felt a scratch on his arm and he wrenched it away. Â âNo.â He mumbled, the word sticking in his mouth and he tried to twist away even as more hands stopped him. Â âNo!â
Panic flared and with a crushing pop the lights went out. Â Struggling, Mac sat up, digging his hands into his eyes as his magic spiked, crackling and sending sparks flying around him.
He didnât know what was going on. Â He didnât know where he was. Â But he wasnât safe, that much he knew.
Cornered and alone, he instinctively raised his hand, shoving everyone in the room back until they hit the wall, pinning them against it. Â His arm started shaking, he didnât know what theyâd done to him, but he wasnât going to be strong enough to hold them there for long and he scrambled to his feet, leaning against the bed as he swayed.
âMac, Mac,â
He frowned, his head was swimming but that sounded like Jackâs voice?
âJack?â
âYeah, bud. Â Iâm here.â Â Jack appeared in the corner of his eye, moving cautiously as he approached. Â âWhere are you, kid?â
âIâmâŚâ Mac didnât know.  His head hurt, his legs shook and he was too hot but he didnât know where he was, he didnât know the answer.
âOkay, thatâs okay, donât worry about that.â Â Jack said. Â âWhat matters is that youâre safe, Mac. Â Okay? Â Iâm with you now and I promise, youâre safe.â
Jack was safety. Â Mac knew that. Â Jack was safe like Bozer was safe, except Jack could also take out four men with two shots. Â And Jack understood the darkness more than Mac ever thought he would. Â Jack could protect him. Â If Jack said he was safe, then he was safe.
âHow about you let these folks go, Mac? Â Just let them leave, I wonât let them come near you.â
Mac wavered, he trusted Jack. Â But what if it was a trick? Â Was Jack really here?
âYouâre safe, Mac.â Â Jack repeated, he was nearly close enough to touch now.
âIâm safe,â Â Mac whispered, as his legs gave out, falling against strong arms.

âHey, kid.â Jack said softly when Mac opened his eyes, as he brushed back Macâs hair and replaced the cool cloth on his forehead. Â âYou with me this time?â
Mac blinked slowly, there was more clarity in them than Jack had seen for hours but Mac was still rocking a significant fever. Â And he confirmed Jackâs hypothesis when he muttered.
âThis time?...with you every time.â
âGuess not.â Jack chuckled. Â âYou realise you said that out loud, right?â
âOh.â
âHowâre you feeling kid?â
âMmmm.â
âThatâs not an answer, dude. Â I need some words.â
âHot.â Â Mac whispered. Â âDid we finish the mission?â
Jack tried not to let the disappointment show on his face. Â Heâd been hoping they were past this, the confusion and the lost look Mac would get on his face.
âYeah, missionâs done, bud.â Â Jack answered, patting Macâs shoulder, judging from the look on Macâs face he couldnât remember what the mission had been anyway. Â But Jack could. Â He remembered how Mac spiked a fever on the flight home and it had only gotten worse when Jack had hauled him into medical. Â Something to do with Macâs magic, burning him up from the inside and the only treatment his doctors had suggested was to ride it out.
âWhenâs ex-fil?â
âMac, do you know where you are?â Â Jack carefully worded the question and Mac opened his eyes fully, his gaze locking onto Jack before sliding away to take in the rest of the room. Â It was entirely empty apart from the bed and a chair for Jack, but at least Jack could see there was some recognition in his eyes. Â Mac stretched out his arm, where an IV was attached with an excessive amount of medical tape and his fingers picked at a loose edge.
âDonât do that, bud.â Â Jack cautioned, gently relocating the fingers. Â âTook me ages to get that in, you donât want to experience a round two.â
âIâm in medical?â Â Mac frowned. Â ââs empty?â
Jack sighed and scrubbed a hand over his face.
âYeah, you were brought in with a fever of 104. Â You didnât know where you were or what was going on.â Â Jack swallowed at the memory. Â âYou blew the monitors, and I was the only person youâd let near you.â
Bright eyes immediately turned worried. Â âDid I hurt anyone?â
âNo, no, Mac.â Jack quickly reassured him. Â âEveryoneâs fine. Â You knocked some things over, got a little pushy, thatâs all.â
Okay, maybe Jack was playing it down a lot. Â It had looked like a small explosion had gone off in the room by the time Jack had got there. Â Sparks lighting up the dark with Mac drenched in sweat and breathing hard in the middle of a bed, absolutely terrified and using his magic to protect himself from the people who wanted to help him.
And that was the humbling thing, Jack had been exempt from all this. Â The only person Mac trusted, Â the only one heâd allowed to touch him.
Speaking of touching it was time for another vitals check. Â Jack slipped his hand around Macâs wrist until his fingertips found his pulse and counted the steady beats. Â Heâd been doing the regular checks and reporting the numbers back to the nurses ever since Mac had melted the cardiac leads Jack had tried to attach earlier.
âWhat are you doing?â Â Macâs sleepy voice asked.
âWeâre doing it old school, since you trashed the monitors and wouldnât let anyone else near you, youâve had good olâ Nurse Dalton doing vital checks all night.â
âI can fix the monitors.â Â Mac muttered as he fumbled with pushing back the blanket pooled around his waist. Â It took worryingly little effort for Jack to still his hands and tug the blanket back up.
âMaybe later, Mac.â Â Jack said, noting as he finished with taking Macâs temperature that it had increased slightly since last time. Â âGoing in the wrong direction again, bud.â
âSorry.â Mac whispered, trying to stay awake.
âItâs alright. Just close your eyes, Mac. Â Get some rest, yeah? Â Iâll be here when you wake.â
