I still don't have a replacement for the hard drive, but the computer is cleaned up and running again. Here it's running System 6.0.4 off of ROM disk, and Gunshy (Mahjong) off of a floppy.
Ah, nostalgia.
I spent countless hours on this computer learning basic programming via HyperCard scripting. It wasn't the first computer I had growing up, but it was the first one that could actually do some serious work. I still have some old school reports that were put together on this thing.

Luck Runs Out
Storage was not kind to this old 40MB hard drive. The grease melted in the heat and had begun to leak out the sides. What stayed in the casing congealed in the lid and on the platters themselves. The heads were stuck in place on the platter and the scraping sounds of hard drive death ensued.
I'll have to replace it with a SCSI2SD.
Floppy Restoration
Completely tore down the floppy drive. It was caked with dust and dried up old grease. Re-lubricated it with some new white lithium grease. It moves as smoothly now as it did when it was new.
It still didn't read the first time I tried it though. Luckily I still have one of those old head cleaning disks. A drop of alcohol and a spin around with the cleaning disk, and this old drive is up and running again.
Time to see how many old floppies have survived the years.

I ordered replacements for all the rest if the capacitors on the analog board, several different diodes, optocoupler, MOSFET, etc.
In the end, I only replaced the optocoupler and the MOSFET. I had narrowed down these two as the most likely to have failed, based on what I could find elsewhere online. After replacing them, I had good voltages on +12V and +5V that I was able to dial into the proper range.
Not Found error - my new sign of success.
One nice thing about this particular model is that there is a minimal operating system in ROM. Hold Command-Option-X-O on startup, and it will boot from ROM disk. Great for testing.
Next up, I need to clean up the floppy drive.
