Ma Jiang
Today we had dinner and a rowdy ma jiang session with Lily (my China bestie) and her family. I am slow and not strategic, but Lily is a patient teacher. "Just never play this game for money with strangers," she advised me...as if that was something I might conceivably do. I have a hard enough time just walking amongst strangers, I can't even imagine hunkering down in some back-alley ma jiang parlor with all the grandmas. In my neighborhood, ma jiang is a constant. I can hear the tiles being shuffled as I type this, and I will hear it all night long through my open window.
