Mel reblogging all this Juanes reminds me of how the only reason I know him is from listening to the radio when I lived in Europe. I can't remember a single time I've listened to a regular "hits" station in America and heard even one song that wasn't 99% English (as I typed this I remembered Gangnam Style, which amazed me to hear on the radio). More significantly, something like 80% of the artists on the radio here are American, based in America or from English speaking countries. It's really telling of the mainstream attitude here. Not looking out at the world to see what it has to offer. When I lived overseas you'd hear a Polish song followed by a German song followed by an American song and completed with something beautiful in Spanish. My mum and dad are the same age, she grew up, in Australia, he grew up in America and the difference in the music they grew up with is startling. She knows every song he does. But he doesn't know half of what my mum heard. It's so sad. Please broaden your horizons yourselves because American media will try and convince you there is barely any foreign music worth listening to. Don't let them deprive you of song.
