you levered yourself atop the breakroom counter, your face contorting in pain.
"ow." the word instinctively left your lips with a small wince. you lowered your chin to glance at the oddly formed purple bruise taking shape on your bicep.
typically, you would leave battle with few superficial cuts from debris, maybe a little blood trickling down from your forehead, however this was much different.
the mission did result in a success, you and other pro-heroes being able to safely secure civilians while battling with a grade A villain. it was a sudden fight, him and his group of villains really giving you a run for your money. a long-waited rest was practically screaming your name—just after the paperwork you have to file.
in the corner of your eye, the door swung open, a slight creak sounding from the motion.
katsuki, the other pro-hero who attended the mission waltzed into the room. his vermillion eyes not taking a second to find you. he approaches silently, the held eye contact conducting communication for you both.
he extends his arm towards you, his grip loosening around a pack of frozen broccoli. an eyebrow raise emitted out of you, your eyes bouncing from the broccoli back to his.
"ran out of ice packs." he read your expression. you slowly nodded, gently taking the gift from his hands.
"HPSC has a billion ice machines, how do we run out of ice." it was a rhetorical question, maybe one that had a little attitude, but fatigue prevented you from caring about your tone.
you lifted your arm and pressed the frozen package against your bicep. involuntarily, you sighed, your shoulders dropping with ease.
"someone really pushed themselves out there."
you sucked your teeth. "yeah. well, all in a day's work, right?."
katsuki's eyes dulled at you for a split second, an eye roll being sent your way. "really, y/n? not time to be crackin' your unfunny ass jokes."
"don't remember cracking one."
"then it's a really shitty fuckin' answer." he folds his arms. "thought you were the rational one out of us both." the last part he murmured under his breath, but you knew bakugou, he doesn't just say shit to go unnoticed.
you squinted your eyes at him, eyebrows furrowing in the process.
"i'm sorry, is there a problem? we finished the mission and saved civilians, so wha—”
“i don’t even want to hear the rest of whatever bullshit you were gonna spew.” katsuki interrupts you, his face contorts. “yes, there is a problem.”
he steps closer, not to intimidate you, but close enough so you could see his facial expression.
“problem between me and who?” it was another rhetorical question, you were aware he was picking something with you, but it didn’t seem plausible enough.
as if he wanted something to be angry about. which was typically true, it’s just you were never at the center of it. not even once.
“you put yourself in reckless fights all night. you don’t give yourself a break. you didn’t listen to any orders, not even my suggestions. now you’re sitting on top of a counter wincing in pain, all bruised, scratched up, and bleeding.” he states. “you were being impulsive and almost cost your life numerous times.”
a vein popped out of his forehead. if it didn’t hurt to laugh, you probably would’ve. instead, you drug your eyes away from his ruby ones.
unknowingly, the broccoli package slips out of your hands. it clinks when it hits the floor, your eyes glued onto it since it seemed much easier to look at than the angry blonde in front of you.
katsuki reached down and grasped the bag. rather than handing it back to you, he presses it against your wound, holding it steady for you.
“don’t be actin’ all stupid again.” his voice softened, but you assume it’s due to the close proximity.
you force a chuckle, your ribs aching from the action. “didn’t know someone cared so much.”
there was a silence. one that lasted a beat too long. you lifted your eyes at him, his irises already giving you attention.
“i wouldn’t be standing here holding this cold ass pack of broccoli if i didn’t.”
his words catch you off guard. it was true you and katsuki had been rumored to be some sort of ‘pro-hero dynamic’, but you two had a vibe that just clicked. it was typically nothing more, nothing less.
“you do?” taken aback wasn’t even the right word. katsuki wasn’t the one to even say something cute to an animal. so for him to admit he cared about you almost didn’t feel real.
he sighs, “you know what i mean. i’m not spellin’ it out for ya. just know, i’m not watching you run yourself into the ground.”
you nod, a small smile turning the corners of your lips. instinctively, you raise your hand and place it atop of his hand that was holding the broccoli against your wound.
“and next time you pull some shit like that, i’m draggin’ you out myself.”
