You see, there are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity. Indeed that's what we provide in our own modest, humble, insignificant... oh, fuck it.
M. Gustave
The Grand Budapest Hotel
TOP FILMS OF 2014 - NUMBER 2 - THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL Wes Anderson can be a mixed bag as a director. You know you are always going to get certain shots, a cohesive colour palate appropriate to the period and a flair for film making that very few directors can muster. What can set certain Anderson films apart as being entertaining or truly mesmerizing then can often be the rogues gallery of characters he assembles.
The Grand Budapest Hotel is a sheer delight to watch. The tale of the Ralph Fiennes M.Gustave and Tony Revolori’s Zero as they deal with the repercussions of the death of favoured Grand Budapest guest Madame D. The story evolves to reveal a slew of bright engaging characters, turns from Anderson favourites and newcomers like Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Willem Dafoe, Mathieu Amalric, Saoirse Ronan and Jason Schwartzman all working together to ensure not one scene in the film falls flat. It is Fiennes and relative newcomer Revolori that steal the show however, Gustave as a well meaning effeminate playboy hotel manager and Zero as a wide eyed fresh faced Lobby Boy. The relationship develops between the two to show real emotional connection in a mature way, Gustave mentors Zero while also respecting him. Seeing the interplay of the two performances is electrifying.
As with all recent Anderson films we see his hallmark film style in full force. Wide angle symmetry and scale models are used to create a whimsical world for his characters to inhabit. Where in previous film Moonrise Kingdom we saw a yellow colour palate at work, The Grand Budapest flows with pink, purple and grey. We see pink in the facade of the hotel, the Mendl's cakes and splashes of interior, we see purple in the uniforms of the hotel and the grey and black uniforms of the soldiers, police and Dmitri and family. The juxtaposition of romantic and bland colours adds to the evocative visual experience. The Grand Budapest Hotel is Anderson at his creative best. From the first poster reveal, the excitement for this film grew, by the time the trailer was unveiled the anticipation was on par with Star Wars. By the time the film hit the cinema it could have been a huge let down or one of the best experiences of the year.

Rudeness is merely an expression of fear. People fear they won’t get what they want. The most dreadful and unattractive person only needs to be loved, and they will open up like a flower.
