And instead of facing Kaname, another who was there when he joined the rank and a mentor, he was facing Kensei. That must have been such a change for him to ultimately readjust to; a sense of familiarity ripped and substituted. Being a Captain is such a hard role -- you have to face and accept the death of your comrades and underlings and behold them being replaced by strangers.
