In the morning the group attended a photo shoot at Liverpool’s African Chambers in Old Hall Street for a Lybro Jeans print ad.
Photographer Richard Cooper recalled, ‘They looked moody but they were very relaxed and amused about the whole business. It was at the shoot that John announced to the other members of the group that they would be number one by the end of the week, a fact they took completely in their stride.’

The NME was the first paper to have ‘From Me To You’ reach number one-it leapt six places after its chart entry the previous week. In the Melody Maker chart, it jumped sixteen places to number 3… George told the paper, ‘Don’t mention work. We’re off on holiday, and that’s all we can think of at the moment.’
“We shared a dressing room with them on the second floor, and they were all very friendly. Ringo spent most of the time in the dressing room sitting by the big window, with a radio listening to Radio Luxembourg. The reception was coming and going. Paul was showing John the lyrics of a song he had started to write on the way there on the back of a cigarette packet. He asked me if I wrote songs as well, and I said I did, so we chatted about that for a while.
“They were the first group I had heard who sounded just like they did on record. You could tell John was the leader, he had a look somehow, a bit of a hard case, but I actually think it was Paul who was in charge.” Andre Wheeldon, musician
