I'd like to take a minute to acknowledge romantic love as one of the most incredible manifestations of resilience and hope I have ever seen. Unrequited love is awful, and there are hundreds of ways in which even requited love can go horribly wrong, but does that stop people from falling in love again and again? Of course not. And what's even more incredible is that this incredibly risky system works - that with every mistake, every abuse of love's power, every accidental or intentional blow inflicted by the people in whose hands we place our hearts, comes the opportunity to heal, to learn, and to set out again more resilient and more informed. With a bit of luck and a lot of acquired skill, we actually can find people who will not only take care of our hearts, but entrust us with theirs. The myriad kinds of relationships in which different people can be happy together, the resilience of every person who gets hurt by love, heals and tries again, and the genuine delight and contentment which result from a healthy romantic relationship are beautiful and inspiring things to witness. I'm completely in awe of the people in my life who create and maintain safe environments in which to love each other - you remind me every day that there is a very real, very reachable light at the end of the tunnel.
