A loud mechanical noise had Griffin shooting upright, panic setting in as unfamiliar smells made him gag. He couldn’t breathe, he couldn’t hear, couldn’t remember where he was and why, and the ground was shifting under him, tipping him sideways.
Yelling, Griffin flailed and managed to catch the edge of the dumpster, trash raining down around him and narrowly avoiding being thrown in the vehicle with it. Griffin threw himself sideways and landed hard on the pavement, taking off at a run and ignoring the shouts of the driver behind him as he rounded the corner, disappearing down the block.
In his haste to get away, he ended up running head first into a solid body, falling backwards and sprawling out on the pavement as the air punched out of him. “I— I didn’t—” Griffin pushed himself backwards, a wrapper still tangled in his hair and blue eyes wide with fear. “—sorry.”
