Spanning nearly the length of the entire Soviet Union itself, the Soviet space program was...
Hey! I made this for one of my classes! It’s just a pretty simple chronological overview of the Soviet space program, using 10 physical objects to represent important points. I actually found some really neat stuff and learned some interesting things about Korolev and the early program, which I might make separate posts for later on here. My Russian professor really liked it and I thought I’d share, if any of y’all are interested in checking it out!
(Which reminds me: in a few months I’ll be starting to dig into my senior thesis, which revolves around American spaceflight history. I’m going to try to keep y’all up to date on how that’s going over the next year or so, in part to hold myself accountable for getting shit done. I’m really looking forward to it tbh!)
Did you know that the Soviet Luna 1 probe was the first manmade object to enter orbit around the sun, as it missed the intended target of the moon?
Луна-1 first to the Moon and first to orbit the Sun
1959: the space probe Луна-1 (Moon 1) is launched from Baikonur, USSR. It became the first probe launched in the direction of the Moon and the first to reach a heliocentric orbit. It is still in the orbit of the Sun.
Sergei Korolev, Luna 1, 1959
