Ramon, walking across the room and turning to face Diego and Felipe: And you believe this preposterous story?

Diego: Felipe does not lie.

Ramon, walking behind Diego and Felipe: He also does not speak! So pray tell, how do you know when the boy is lying or not?

*Diego rolls his eye with an exasperated sigh.*

Diego: We communicate through sign language.

Ramon, a bit sarcastically: Ah, sign language, yes! Well, perhaps you took this…

*He holds out his hand palm down, while Diego rolls his eyes again.*

Ramon: …for that.

*He turns his hand palm up.*

Ramon: You are extremely naive, de la Vega. The boy simply stayed out all night and concocted the story to save his own skin.

Diego, shaking his head and chuckling: Alcalde…

Ramon, angrily: You are trying to embarrass me in front of the church elders! Well, it will not work! Now, if you don't mind, I'm an extremely busy man.

*Diego looks at Felipe, rolls his eyes a last time and - putting his hand on Felipe's back - leads him out of the office.*

Protective Diego

Ramon: And with the girl in my custody, it ensures the cooperation of her renegade tribe.

*He starts dragging Kinona, and Felipe surges forward toward them. But Diego grabs him by both arms from behind.*

Diego, through gritted teeth: Felipe! Don't.

Ramon, staring menacingly at Felipe: Stand aside, boy. You know, I've never hung a deaf mute before… But there's a first time for everything.

*He leads Kinona away, as Felipe struggles to free himself from Diego's grasp.*

Kinona, as she is being dragged away: Felipe! Don't let hem take me!

*Don Alejandro follows after Ramon and Kinona, as Diego keeps hold of Felipe.*

Diego: I know. I know! But if you're going to fight, chose your time, not his.

Concerned Diego

Diego: I promise you, Señor: if your brother is innocent, I'll get him acquitted.

Nestor, reaching for a wooden bucket: You better! Or this will be your head.

*He crushes the bucket into little pieces, as Diego stares worriedly and Ramon stares incredulously. Nestor then throws the pieces onto the floor, before he and Enrique walk out of the jail. Diego and Ramone watch them go.*

Ramon: There's a lesson to be learned, Don Diego…

*He clears his throat.*

Ramon: Never volunteer for anything!

*Diego nods his head, then looks down at the destroyed bucket.*

Jealous Victoria

*Ramon bows to Victoria, then leaves the tavern. Diego watches him go then looks at Victoria.*

Diego, smiling, to Victoria: He's moody, isn't he?

*Victoria, mindful of his hosting a single woman in his house, slams the wine bottle on the counter and leaves - while Diego looks at her a bit bemused.*

Diego, still smiling astonished: He's not the only one…
