This was a fast and interesting book that I read for class. I really enjoyed the rawness and the overall strangeness of some of the stories. They focus on queers, especially Latino queers, so theres already that rawness that can be attributed to queer stories but there also is just a raunchy tone to many of the stories. It’s a very short collection, and while it didn’t wow me away and I don’t have so much more to say on it, I still believe it was great and that many others would like it just as much, if not more, than I did. Go and get it because I’m now going to talk about it in slightly more spoiler-y detail below:

One story that I enjoyed was The Chosen One. There are so many ways that this story could have been read and analyzed. There are aspects of queerness in most every character of this story, but also there are ideas of transformation. I found it very interesting that all this desire and sex came from the characters father beating him for being queer and thus making him beautiful.

I really enjoyed the story of The Garden, I felt like it discussed a lot of ideas about loneliness. That probably could be said about a lot of the stories, such as the one the dog who was dying? I don’t know the name of that story, but it was interesting because of the format. It was written in an epistolary format but only from one persons perspective, and you can add all sorts of character more because of the lack of response from the other party as well as the change in tone throughout the notes to them.
