Wei Wuxian had been teasingly suggesting that Lan Wangji coming so deep and so copiously inside him would surely result in pregnancy even in a man since their first days together. At first Lan Wangji had thought that it was only one of his prurient fantasies, like being taken by force. And it wasn't not a prurient fantasy. But...

The first time Lan Wangji caught Wei Wuxian researching previous cutsleeve cultivation partners, it hadn't occurred to him to think anything of it. Their marriage was unconventional, even if even Uncle had been forced to swallow it in the end. It was only natural that brilliant, insatiably curious Wei Ying would want to know more. The first time he had found him with medical texts, he had assumed it had to do with honoring the late and very much lamented (even if only in particularly select spheres) Wen Qing, and immediately stepped away to give his husband the privacy to which he was very much entitled.

The first time Lan Wangji discovered Wei Wuxian with medical texts pertaining to human reproduction, yes, he had made the connection with Wei Ying's insistence that they purchase a jade plug with which to keep in Lan Wangji's seed "so it would be sure to take." But since, for Wei Ying, there was no such thing as too far to go for their bedroom games, it still hadn't occurred to Lan Wangji that he was serious.

He and Wei Ying already had a son, was the thing. That Wei Ying had been absent, had been dead, for thirteen of A-Yuan's most important developmental years was no less a tragedy than it would have been if A-Yuan had been his own flesh and blood. It wasn't that Lan Wangji had never imagined, had never wanted, more children. But when he had imagined giving A-Yuan brothers and sisters, now that Wei Ying was back to raise them with, they were always more foundlings, usually acquired on night-hunts in his imagination for some reason. A little boy whose mother's ghost was causing a ruckus trying to find someone to care for him now that she was gone. A little girl who had been carried off by a nine-headed phoenix because her birth parents didn't want her. Etcetera.

Admittedly, it somewhat punctured his fantasies that Wei Ying had been alive again for years, now, and no existing little ones had spontaneously and supernaturally fallen into their laps. But as reticent as he naturally was, he hadn't gotten around to being able to bring up the possibility of going out and actually looking.

But, as always, Wei Ying was miles ahead of him and in a completely different direction.

The first time he had truly understood what his husband was up to was when Wei Wuxian had completed his research and presented it as a fait accompli. He had worked out how it could be done, in theory, you know, if Lan Wangji wanted, in that precise way he had of desperately attempting to conceal how much he wanted something so that if Lan Wangji did not also want it it could be swept aside and ignored. It was a bad habit that Lan Wangji was doing his best to teach him was not necessary, but years and years of being valued only instrumentally were not so easily swept away.

Fortunately, giving Wei Ying everything he wanted and a great many things he hadn't known he wanted until Lan Wangji dug them up to present to him was the farthest thing in the world from an unpleasant task.

Still, there was a spectrum of things he refused to refuse Wei Ying, from things where almost all of his own enjoyment came from seeing Wei Ying happy, to things where he was as personally invested as Wei Ying. As soon as Lan Wangji fully understood what Wei Ying was talking about, he swept him up in his arms and kissed him breathless.

Lan Wangji would take any excuse or opportunity to sweep his Wei Ying into his arms and kiss him breathless, but this was still a particularly delightful occasion to do it on.

"So," Wei Wuxian said, face bright red, when Lan Wangji finally let him draw breath again. "I—I'm guessing you like the idea?"

Lan Wangji responded to this by kissing him breathless some more, which of course Wei Wuxian responded to with a delighted shriek of feigned protest.

"What do you need to do?" Lan Wangji asked.

Wei Wuxian squirmed in the particular way that meant he actually wanted to be put down. Lan Wangji put him down as smoothly as though he hadn't been reluctant to do so at all. Wei Wuxian picked up his notes and rifled through them, explaining exactly what was going to be necessary.

"How long do you think that will take?" Lan Wangji half-growled into Wei Ying's ear.

A visible shiver passed down Wei Wuxian's spine.

"Ah—maybe an hour. Probably less," he breathed.

"Good," Lan Wangji said, and bit Wei Ying's ear, and then swept off to get some work done in the intervening hour, leaving Wei Wuxian to yelp "mean!" at his husband's retreating back for the suddenness of the abandonment.

Their subsequent liaison was one that warmed Lan Wangji's ears to remember even months later, warm and sweet and ecstatic.

Now he woke each morning with a slightly rounder-bellied Wei Ying in his arms, warm and cuddlesome and sweet. It was hard enough to leave the bed in the morning when all it contained was the love of his life; adding their unborn child to the mix was...

He had been forced to alter his morning schedule to remove any commitments before Wei Ying awoke and the two had had a somewhat leisurely morning together. Uncle had not approved, but then, Uncle approved of very little concerning Wei Ying. He would ultimately accept it, as he he had their marriage, because he had little other choice.
