So I saw Love, Simon today
I loved the movie but I felt so bad for Simon when his friends left him alone after he was outed
I get why Simons friends were mad at him. He manipulated their feelings and it was totally shitty on his part even if his reasoning was understandable. However, I thought it was cruel of them to ditch him on the first day back after he was outed. This kids life was blown up and they left him without any support in school and that felt wrong.
I guess the movie was trying to hold Simon accountable for his mistakes which is fair, I just wish his friends could have put their anger aside for a moment to make sure he was okay.
I’m straight, and I don’t want to pretend to understand what it’s like to come out, I know that I can’t. However I had to tell my friends that’s I was diagnosed with depression. My life was out of control and I wanted them to be there for me, but they weren’t because they were annoyed with me for different things. I’m not sure if it would be the same feeling, i just know that when your life is falling apart and your friends can’t step back and look at what feels like the big picture it really hurts.
I guess I’m just trying to understand what made Simons friends actions so easily forgivable when he had to grovel. He was shitty, but in a terrible situation and he should apologize of course, but no one should have to deal with their life being turned upside down by themselves. Did anyone else see them being a little selfish?
