If he wasn't so stubborn, he would have gone back to SHIELD long ago, especially after nearly half a year of living on his own as opposed to having people around to talk to regularly. He'd gotten a few phone calls since leaving the team, and he hadn't ignored them, but that wasn't nearly the same thing as living with five or more other people. The switch from base to apartment wasn't too difficult at first, but after a week of not being able to sleep because of the rain hitting the windows and causing too much noise for him to stay asleep for more than a few minutes at a time.
But he was stubborn, and enough so that, because he was running late, he had only grabbed his jacket before hurrying out into the "drizzle" of rain that was probably closer to a downpour because of the oncoming storm that was supposed to hit within the next few days -- which does not sound fun at all -- while navigating his way down the flights of stairs without slipping.
