THIS FIRST WEEK AT CRANE HAS BEEN SO AMAZING AND NEVER HAVE I EVER BEEN SO GOD DAMN HAPPY AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Please Help Me Towards My Future!
I found a Bass Clarinet that will be much cheaper, about $3,000 and I just need the money before May so I can have it for the summer time.
Hello, my name is Tara. I am currently a senior at Beekmantown Central High School in northern NY, and have been fully accepted into SUNY Potsdam for the fall semester. I am also hoping to be accepted into Crane's music program, my audition is Wednesday, February 22nd. I have started this fundraiser to help purchase a Low C Professional model Bass Clarinet, specifically a Lyrique Low C Model 925. I want this instrument because it will not only improve my technic and expand the range of skills I can acquire, but I need it for college. My plans for college include working to help pay tuition, room and board. I will not be able to afford a professional model Bass Clarinet in addition to college tuition. I would like this Bass Clarinet for the summer to practice on, especially if I don't make the audition the first time, for the purpose of reauditioning. I would be truly grateful for any amount donated. If you could donate even a dollar to this fund because truly it is my dream to go to college for music. All the money donated will go towards the purchase of the instrument. Any money left over will go towards my college funds, such as tuition, food, items I will need to live, etc. I have set $3,000 amount as this fundraiser goal but even if the amount isn't reached the money given will be extremely helpful. I have spent hours of practice time working towards my future and to achieve my dreams. Being able to have this Bass Clarinet would be so helpful towards my career. I am hoping to study music education at the Crane School Of Music. Having the opportunity to this Bass Clarinet will enable me to prosper and teach music to the next generation of students to come. Thank you to anyone who donates. Some groups/things ORGANIZATIONS I have participated in, or been involved in: * 8 NYSSMA solos. NYSSMA it is a festival in which you prepare a solo and play for a judge and receive a score. I have prepared and performed level 1 to conference (Conference solo is also an audition for the highest band in the state on top of the regular festival score; I did two) *Area-All State for 5 years (High school level band, played in grades 8th-12th) *Been in All-county (including all-county 11-12 orchestra) *Played with a college level Symphonic Band at SUNY Plattsburgh *Member of the Strawhatters Community Band *I was accepted and participated in NYSBDA twice: 8th grade year and this year as a senior. (Second highest band in the state; I was chosen both times from a pool of about 140 students state wide) *Member of my schools pit band for the musical productions of Once Upon A Mattress, Annie, …. This year’s musical allows me to practice switching between Bass Clarinet and Clarinet within the production itself. *I have taken up private Clarinet (soprano) lessons.

Response vs. Range
Concerning the Buffet Bass Clarinet “extension,” a good point is brought up. Extended range clarinets usually suffer from having a stuffier and weaker tone than those without. In fact, one of the praises for the alto clarinet (I know, people praised the alto clarinet?!) in the 19th century was that it had a much more powerful tone than the basset horn, due to not having those basset notes.
I’ve even felt this when playing the paperclip contrabass. The one I played had had the bell and part of the final tubing as detachable. This included the tone holes for the low C#/Db and low C. If I took this part out, the response and volume of the lowest note (either a low D or low Eb), as well as that of the whole instrument, improved.
Many folks have expressed disdain that a good low Eb bass is discarded due to not having a low C. And many do remark that only the low D gets used frequently. The extra length of the instrument proves to be troublesome.
So is the extra range worth it?
To me, absolutely. So what if little music actually calls for the low C#/low C? Call me irrational, but if I got myself a low C bass, I’ll use that low C ALL THE TIME. The low C on the contrabass is magical, even though the instrument gets a bit stuffier. The sacrifice is worth the reward. And it’s not like I can always get an octocontra alto (I wish!) to cover that note.
Of course, if I meant “is the extra range worth the money,” that would be the another rant for another day…
Watermelon Agua Fresca with Mint and Lime Juice.

Agua Fresca is more than flavoured water – a blend of fruit, water and syrup you can spike with herbs and citrus to create a sophisticated soft drink that makes the most of ripe summer fruit.
Served up by street vendors and Taquerias in Central and South America, Aguas Frescas are refreshing fruit based drinks – puréed fruit and water in its simplest form. Sweetened if needed with sugar, agave nectar or honey.
We took inspiration from a collection of jewel coloured Aguas frescas on offer at a Mexican restaurant on our recent holiday to Florida. Bursting with flavour and a perfect complement to spicy foods on hot days.
We use simple syrup to sweeten our fruit purées. This allows us to infuse herb or citrus flavours into the drink. In this watermelon agua Fresca we add mint and muddle in some lime.
Ingredients:
75g sugar
100ml water
1 tablespoon chopped mint leaves ( plus extra for garnish)
1 large, ripe watermelon – peeled, chopped and deseeded
2 limes
Method:
Heat the sugar in the water in a pot until the sugar melts.
Add the mint leaves and heat till simmering then remove from heat, allow to cool completely.
Purée the watermelon in a blender.
Mix with the cooled syrup and add extra water to dilute if needed. What you want is a fruity juice not a smoothie.
Quarter the limes and put them into the jug with the juice. Muddle with the handle of a wooden spoon.
Chill in refrigerator till ready to serve.
Add ice cubes and extra mint, lime or slices of melon to garnish.
