During the reign of Frederick II (1740ā1786), Berlin definitively established itself as a major European cultural metropolis. Despite the destruction of the Baroque city centre in the 19th century and the devastation of World War II, several buildings from this era can still be found in Berlin and Potsdam. šPalais des Prinzen Heinrich: Built between 1748 and 1753 as a residence for Prince Henry of Prussia; since 1809, it has served as the seat of Humboldt University of Berlin. šThe New Wing (Charlottenburg Palace): An early masterpiece of Friderician Rococo, famous for its Golden Gallery. šThe Old Library: Built between 1775 and 1780 as part of the Forum Fridericianum; since 1969, it has housed the Faculty of Law at Humboldt University of Berlin. šSanssouci Palace: The Kingās personal retreat, constructed between 1745 and 1747. It was here that "Old Fritz" passed away on August 17, 1786. šThe Gendarmenmarkt: The domed towers flanking the two churches were constructed between 1780 and 1785. šSt. Hedwigās Cathedral: Berlinās oldest Catholic church, built between 1747 and 1773 as part of the Forum Fridericianum. šThe Picture Gallery: This building houses the Kingās extensive art collection. šThe Berlin State Opera (Unter den Linden): The building was constructed between 1741 and 1743, based on designs by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. šThe New Palace: The final major Baroque palace complex in Prussia, built between 1763 and 1769. šThe Chinese Teahouse: A Chinoiserie-style structure located in Potsdam. šThe New Chambers: Built between 1771 and 1775, this building housed a theatre, banquet halls, and concert halls; it was here that the King received his guests.
