Every possible direction ahead and over your shoulder, to turn to and to turn from. And what went thru his head in this moment? A phonecall from a year ago. A broken bit of lyric he wrote 8 years ago. The last sentence from a book he bought but never read in full. The opening lines of dialogue from a familiar film. /I’m a connoisseur of roads. I’ve been tasting roads my whole life. This road will never end. It probably goes all around the world./ And the sediment settles - some dust picks up in the wind and infests his clothes his hair his lungs. And things feel so different out here. The pebbles in his shoes the stones in his palms. The sense of something familiar in something brand new. Sometimes home becomes otherworldly - outside you; its biology and makeup - beyond you; always slightly out of reach. And you begin to think even your voice sounds different? The weight of your thoughts and things you meant to say when you said something else. That one phonecall and the others that followed. It sits differently. In the base of your curve. In the hinge connecting your skull to your spine and the line to the harness.
