πππππ β¦ "Twenty-Seven Times."
Summary: Louis has been trying to tell you something for months. He rehearses the words in his head, finds the perfect moments, and then loses his nerve every single time. Because you're his best friend, admitting that he's fallen for you feels terrifying, especially when he's afraid that saying it could change everything between you. But eventually, Louis realises that keeping his feelings to himself is becoming harder than facing his fear. Maybe all it takes is three little words. βI really like you.β
pairing: Louis Γ reader genre: fluff, slow burn, friends to lovers, romance setting: College/modern AU wc: 1.8k

Louis had rehearsed it at least twenty-seven times.
Not that he was counting.
He'd tried saying it in his head while brushing his teeth.
I like you.
Too simple.
While walking to class.
I've liked you for a while.
Too serious.
Once, he'd even whispered it to himself in the mirror.
"I really like you."
He'd immediately looked away from his reflection and muttered, "Nope."
The problem wasn't that he didn't know how he felt.
He knew.
He'd known for months.
The problem was you.
You were his best friend.
You were the person he texted when something funny happened, the person he looked for first whenever he walked into a room, the person who somehow made even the most boring days feel worth remembering.
And if he told you and you didn't feel the same way
He couldn't lose you.
So Louis kept quiet.
You noticed something was wrong eventually.
"You've been weird lately."
Louis nearly choked on his drink.
"I'm always weird."
"No. You're extra weird."
He laughed nervously.
You were sitting beside him on the steps outside campus, your shoulder pressed lightly against his.
He'd spent the entire afternoon trying to find the courage to tell you.
And now you were making it impossible.
"What's going on?" you asked.
"Nothing."
"Liar."
"I'm not lying."
"You are."
He looked at you.
You were smiling.
That was the problem.
You always smiled at him like that.
Like you trusted him.
Like he was safe.
Louis looked down at his hands.
"I've just got something on my mind."
"What?"
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
You waited.
He swallowed.
"Never mind."
Your smile faded slightly.
"You know you can tell me anything, right?"
He nodded.
"I know."
"Then tell me."
He looked at you again.
His heart was pounding so hard he was convinced you could hear it.
"I..."
You tilted your head.
"Yeah?"
He panicked.
"I think I'm failing my class."
You stared at him.
"...Louis."
He winced.
"Yeah?"
"You don't even take that class."
He covered his face.
"I know."
You burst out laughing.
He laughed too, mostly because he was embarrassed.
But when the laughter faded, you were still looking at him.
Softly.
"Whatever it is," you said, "you can tell me when you're ready."
And then you bumped your shoulder against his.
"I'll listen."
Louis watched you walk away a few minutes later.
He sighed.
"Idiot."
He wasn't sure if he meant himself or his feelings.
Probably both.
The next attempt happened two weeks later.
You were studying together at his place.
Wellβ
You were studying.
Louis was staring at you.
You looked up from your notes.
"Why are you looking at me?"
He immediately looked down.
"I'm not."
"You literally were."
"No, I wasn't."
"You were."
He smiled.
"Maybe I was."
Your cheeks warmed.
"Why?"
There it was again.
The perfect opportunity.
Louis' fingers tightened around his pen.
I like you.
He could say it.
He should say it.
Instead
"Your hair looks nice."
You blinked.
"What?"
"Your hair."
"You were staring at me because of my hair?"
"Yeah."
You narrowed your eyes.
"You're lying again."
He laughed.
"Maybe."
You shook your head and went back to your notes.
Louis leaned back in his chair.
Another opportunity gone.
He was beginning to think he'd never be able to say it.
That night, you were leaving when you noticed Louis standing by the front door.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"You've said that like five times lately."
He smiled faintly.
"I know."
You slipped your shoes on.
"Okay. I'll stop asking."
You reached for the door.
"Wait."
You turned.
Louis' heart jumped into his throat.
He looked at you.
There was something about the way you were standing there, waiting for him, that made him realise he couldn't keep running from it.
Not forever.
He took a breath.
"I've been trying to tell you something."
Your expression softened.
"Okay."
He looked down.
"I don't know how to say it."
"You don't have to say it perfectly."
He laughed quietly.
"That's the thing. I keep trying to make it perfect."
"Why?"
"Because it's important."
You went quiet.
Louis rubbed his palms against his jeans.
"I've been scared."
"Of what?"
"Of ruining everything."
Your eyes widened slightly.
"Louis..."
"I really don't want things between us to change."
He finally looked at you.
"But they've already changed for me."
You didn't say anything.
He took another breath.
"I started liking you."
A pause.
"Not just as my friend."
His voice became quieter.
"I tried to ignore it. I thought it would go away."
You stared at him.
"It didn't."
He smiled nervously.
"It got worse."
You couldn't help but smile.
Louis noticed.
"Why are you smiling?"
"Because you're cute when you're nervous."
He groaned.
"Please don't."
You laughed.
He looked down again.
"I just..."
His voice softened.
"I really like you."
There.
He'd finally said it.
Three words he'd been carrying around for months.
Three words that suddenly didn't feel nearly as terrifying as he'd imagined.
You stepped closer.
"Louis?"
"Yeah?"
"I've been waiting for you to say that."
His eyes widened.
"You have?"
You nodded.
"You're not exactly subtle."
He laughed, relief washing over his face.
"So you knew?"
"I had a feeling."
He shook his head.
"All those times I tried to tell you..."
"I know."
"I was so nervous."
"I know."
"I told you I was failing a class I don't even take."
You laughed.
"That was probably the most obvious one."
Louis smiled.
Then he looked at you for a moment.
"So..."
"So?"
"What happens now?"
You smiled.
"Now you stop being scared."
He laughed softly.
"That's easier said than done."
You reached for his hand.
His fingers immediately curled around yours.
"Then we'll figure it out together."
Louis looked down at your intertwined hands.
Then back at you.
And for the first time in months, he didn't have to rehearse what he wanted to say.
"I really like you."
You squeezed his hand.
"I really like you too."
And somehow, the words he'd been so afraid of turned out to be the easiest ones he'd ever heard.
