interview: YunB’s emotion collection in THE BREAKUP ARCHIVES
1. Please introduce your album, The Breakup Archives?
Everyone experiences breakups. You're either the one to call it off or on the receiving end. The truth is, regardless of how you break up, it hurts. “The Breakup Archives” is based on my experience. Every song was produced and recorded during my breakup. Call me crazy, but expressing my pain through music was my way to push through the breakup as the one on the receiving end. This album is a day-by-day journal in the process of breaking up. I would never be able to make another album like this. The emotion has to be real for a song to connect truly. This is one of those rare albums where everything is almost too real.
2. The title track killing points?
“Lost in Pain” was recorded at my lowest point during the breakup. The raw pain, despair, and emptiness of being left were unbearable. There is no way to escape the pain. This song is about accepting and enduring the emotional pain when the one you love ends up leaving you.
3. Any interesting episodes while shooting the music video?
When the sun was up, I had so much fun shooting the music video. Once the sun went down, the temperature dropped to -2°C, and I was literally freezing to the point of hypothermia.
4. Other than the title track, which tracks from the album do you wish to have more recognition?
“Gangstaz Cry” and “Second Chances.” Both songs are about accepting my faults and shortcomings as a partner that I realized after the breakup when it was too late to bring her back. It's funny how we forget to appreciate the smallest things when we take them for granted.
5. What inspires you the most while writing your music?
The emotion has to be real. The message has to move people, and my listeners will connect to my songs if my feelings are authentic. Therefore, my biggest inspiration is to connect and to do that, I never lie nor fabricate any events through my music. I guess this is why it's tough for me to make a song when life is being too good to me. (laugh)
6. Which artist do you wish to collaborate with in the future?
No particular artist in mind. I'm open to any collaborations.
7. What were you like in your childhood? Back then, what were you immersed in the most?
I was a nerd all the way to my senior year of high school. I was more of an introvert hybrid who loved the outdoors, but at the same time, I loved playing the piano and reading books. Personality-wise, I was always chill.
8. Are there any differences between YunB and Myeong Yun Baek (명윤백)?
Not that big of a difference. I guess YunB represents the moment when I decided to take music seriously back in college.
9. What impression do you think you give when you first meet someone?
Most people have a good impression. Everyone carries a certain vibe, and I think my vibes are positive.
10. Where is your favorite escape place?
My room, watching YouTube or Netflix.
11. How would you describe your daily fashion style?
DOPE
12. How did ODE TO US come about, care to share more on your clothing brand?
Last year, when I was hospitalized from a motorcycle accident, I planned to launch a brand. I wanted to create a brand that "The Cool Guy" would wear. During my target brand research, I realized that while all these brands' design was amazing, the philosophy and core behind them were lacking. I wanted to create a solid brand both on the outside and, more importantly, the inside.
The details on my brand philosophy and design are on the website www.ode-to-us.com Go check it out!
13. Christmas is on its way, what is your favourite Christmas moment?
The vibes. Christmas has always given me a good vibe. I can't handpick a moment, but it had to be last year because I got out of the hospital on Christmas eve.
14. To the people who just got to know YunB, what is the best way for them to get to know you better?
Just know that I'm a nerd who loves creating. "Art for Art's Sake" is my motto.
15. Lastly, can you say a few words to your fans in Malaysia?
I cannot wait to see you guys. I truly appreciate you guys from the bottom of my heart, and I will not disappoint you with my music! Last but not least, I hope everyone gets through the COVID-19 crisis safely, and I am sending every one of you good vibes. Positivity is the key to the lock!
