HOW-TO: Make the fisherman rib cowl from Loopy Mango Knitting by Oejong Kim

Making this cowl in the fisherman rib stitch will give you a chunkier and more three-dimensional look and feel compared to a traditional rib. It is achieved by alternating rows of regular knit and purl with rows of P1B (Purl 1 Below) and K1B (Knit 1 Below)—so simply insert the needle as if for a knit stitch but below the strand of yarn, and do the same for P1B on alternate rows.

Finished Measurements: 8½ x 13 inches (21.5 x 33 cm)

Materials

Merino No. 5 by Loopy Mango, 5.3 ounce (150 g) balls each 74 yards (68 m)

1 ball in Red Riding Hood

US size 19 (15 mm) circular needles, 16 inches (40 cm) or 20 inches (50 cm) long

Gauge

4 sts = 4 inches (10 cm)

8 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)

Tips: A stitch marker is essential when knitting this style. If you don’t have a stitch marker, just use a piece of yarn or thread in a different color.

Pattern

Cast on 28 sts.

Join yarn to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker.

RND 1: K28.

RND 2: *P1, K1B; rep from * to end.

RND 3: *P1B, K1, rep from * to end.

RND 4 TO 30: Rep RND 2 AN D 3.

Bind off.

Finishing When you are finished knitting your project, you will need to do one more step—weave in all loose ends. You only need a tail of about 1–2 inches (2–4 cm). Push it inside the garment and simply hide it in between the stitches. You can use a large tapestry needle (A) or your fingers to weave in the ends and secure them with a felting needle (B), or sew them with a sewing needle and thread in a matching color.
