Do the names Winslow Homer and Norman Rockwell conjure images of African Americans or colored people for you? They didn't for me before 2006, when I stumbled upon a small painting in the Newark Museum named "Near Andersonville" by Homer. The tellers/writers of history (especially in education) can try to skew it all they want, but real artists/painters will always bring the light. It is then up to the rest of us to see it. There is a girl in my printmaking class I was talking to about a project we are doing (which is making a book and story that should have a strong story or some creative story. Anyway, she wasn't sure if her idea would be okay because she wants to do a story about rape because she thinks it should talked about more. She wasn't sure it was a good idea because it might be too hard hitting and affect others. I told her, "as artists part of what we do is not only to make our own work but, to speak for other who can utter a word about it. It's our duty to do art about things that hard to talk about; it's our duty to do so no matter what. It doesn't matter if your a writer or a musical artists or even just a visual artist. Our whole inspiration is to talk about us, how we think, who we are and the surroundings going on that effect us including harsh topic that are hard to talk about, because somewhere out there there is most likely someone that wants to talk about it but cannot so we talk for them. We imply that there is someone out there that cares, help cope and someone who will be the voice." And after I told her that she thanked me and continued to do her sketch. Not caring if it might be a "harsh topic" to talk about because it's an important topic to her. So if there is anyone out there that has the time to read this with my poor grammar, continue to do what you're doing. Someone out there really needs us to voice it. No matter the subject.
