They did it because they believed in what this country could be, and that we could change it for the better. In the preamble to the song proper, he announces "Welcome 2 the New Power Generation," shortly before introducing the listener to the word "Hundalasiliah" (which is Nelsonian variant of "hallelujah," or "praise be" or "check out this funky jam I'm about to lay on you"). This was Prince casting himself as reverent Prince, if not Reverend Prince—remember, he had pulled The Black Album at the last minute because he thought it was evil, and replaced it with the more buoyantly spiritual Lovesexy. Perhaps he envisioned his listeners as his flock, a generation he could lead into light, rather than darkness pistils and nakedness, rather than aberrant carnality New Power, rather than malevolent energy. . From Alex Hahn's 'Possessed: The Rise and Fall of Prince': Having shelved The Black Album, Prince immediately threw himself into the recording of his next LP, Lovesexy, which he conceived as a document of his epiphany. While the tension between carnality and spirituality had always been a feature of Prince's music, his new lyrics presented these two forces as working in tandem and harmony. Lust and religious rapture were described, in essence, as identical the title track describes a feeling of mystical enlightenment and also contains lines about sexual emissions. Prince worked mostly by himself, although Sheila E. played drums on several tracks.
