Mermay days 16-18
Isofolk - Isopod mermaids are a common folk of the sea floor. Aloof scavengers, pickpockets and gluttons.
Kraken - Giant squid mermaids are an ancient race of the sea. They don't mingle with other mermaids and keep to themselves in their giant, hidden cities of the depths. Only a rare wandering individual is ever seen by other eyes.
Deep Singer - Sperm whale mermaids are huge guardians of order. Their loud voices and bell tolls are used both for long distance communication and keeping the abhorrent leviathans to their dark depths.
Really Big Bugs
I started a post here about me figuring out how to make a realistic big bug for upcoming chapters of Logical Proposals. I wanted the alien planet we'll encounter to be at least feasible, but mostly I wanted giant rolly pollies. Crustaceans get big by evolving in aquatic environments, though, so I landed on trying to make an insect-type creature that could grow to be a third to half the size of Soundwave (on par with Rumble when standing vertical or Ravage when standing horizontal).
So, here are the notes I made and the design I settled on for my alien rolly polly bugs:

On Earth, oxygen makes up approximately 21% of the atmosphere. On this big bug world, it's upwards of 95%. Because big bugs.
These guys feed off wet plant matter and decomposing matter (aka, detritivores). The three guts are there to process the hell out of what they eat to get as much nutrients as they can from their food. Their metabolism is highly efficient, and they can store excess nutrients in the third gut (it's not so much fat as the lining that builds up in a uterus).
There so much physics breakage in making bugs big. Please accept my offering of roll around to redistribute hemolymph and funky chemistry with the hemolymph to keep it from settling due to gravity. I couldn't change the gravity enough to solve big bugs without making other creatures far too bouncy.
I gave them robust tracheal tubes, pseudo-lungs, and psudo-hearts to get around the whole no-circulatory-or-respiratory-systems. Specifically with the tracheal tubes, there are branches connecting the dorsal tube to the bit of exoskeleton sitting between/connecting cuticle plates and tubes connecting the ventral tube to the thinner ventral exoskeleton to maximize exposure points to the atmosphere. I also have a ton of tubes not drawn that go everywhere to optimize pathways. This is all to get around the issue of volume-to-surface area ratios in scaling an object up this much. Think m&ms. Mini m&ms taste like more shell-to-chocolate than a normal m&m, and big m&ms taste like more chocolate-to-shell. That's because volume scales faster than surface area. This isn't a problem for creatures that can push blood and oxygen throughout a big body. But if those systems rely on short distances with passive or far less energy-intensive methods of circulation, then going big means more volume means long, long distances. Having thin bodies helps, but the pseudo- lungs and hearts are very, very necessary for these guys to work.
For the sake of internal space, I took away the bug's ovary. In its place is a much smaller one that produces relatively small eggs and few of them. My thinking is for this species (hence forth referred to as the rolly pollies) to be k-strategists instead of the typical r-strategists of the insects on Earth; this is mainly because more advanced species tend to evolve k-selection, opting to prioritize a few offspring at a time to ensure a high offspring survival rate via parental care. They'd be oviparous, specifically laying a handful of unfertilized eggs in the ground for their partner to fertilize externally and resulting in one to two offspring at a time. They parents would make a pit in the ground for the eggs to be laid in and tend to the eggs by supplying the surrounding ground with regurgitated detritus and ensuring the temperature doesn't fluctuate too much. The resulting offspring looks essentially the same as the parents and goes through several molting phases as they grow. They continue to molt throughout their lives even once they're done growing to regenerate their cuticle plating periodically (like isopods).
The mass ratio of person to ganglia (think brain) is kind of insane, and while this aided their evolution of intelligence, the ganglia are notable for how much sensory input they are able to process. They have light sensors on the tops of the heads (so they can "see" above, behind, and while curled), a whole jut-out ganglion near their mouths takes in tastes, scents, and touch to rival anything seen on Earth. I really like the idea, though, of the thoracic and abdominal ganglia not only controlling involuntary processes in their respective regions but retaining a degree of memory independent of the cerebral ganglia. So they have high sensory processing, high cerebral memory retention of said sensory inputs, AND their bodies can remember how it behaved given a particular stimuli and then react accordingly. Without the cerebral ganglia ever consciously knowing. That's like having a brain in your chest that remembers what to do when your hand touches fire and reacts near immediately, faster than you ever could when you had only the brain in your head to fully process the touch. Or your stomach remembering on its own, in a sense, what to do when it encounters a toxin and handling it all on its own.
The whole reason I parsed out how the rolly pollies physically function is to understand how their societies would form around their biology and ecology. They have to exist in a moist ecosystem with a lot of plant life and few major predators targeting them, specifically. They're decomposers achieving tool-use level societal structures, so they have to have bodies and an environment that allows them to settle in one place for long periods, ideally generations.
So, here's what I'm thinking. They're primarily gatherers and farmers using nearby environments and locally engineered environments to find or cultivate a variety of plant-life. They eat cooked, raw, and/or decomposing plants. Since their reproductive strategy lends them to using the dirt and staying put for several months, then it makes sense to me for their homes to be built out of sediments like inorganic clay. They dig down to the clay sediment level (reserving the dug out dirt for agri- and aqua-culture) and take wet clay found in local waterways to form dome-like homes. Small arches too small for infants to crawl through let in light to each room, and they have doors, but they don't have windows since they haven't seen a reason to melt sand yet. Molted exoskeletons are recycled into fencing materials, roof fortification, and (when ground up into a powder) fertilizer. They're primarily monogamous and mate for life. There's a room in the home built strictly for eggs, and the community can contribute to the parents by offering them additional decomposing food items, oils, and herbs that are supposed to help with development as well as mold and parasite protection. They're familiar with plants to the extent they have a robust medical system. Because of how connected they are to it, most of their scientists are biochemists, ecologists, and botanists. With how much they are able to process sensory-wise, their languages are complex mixes of speech, scents, and touch. Speech lays out the basic suject-verb information while scents and touch add modifiers, tenses, etc.

This is the first time you've ever truly seen him. You've heard stories. Stories of your mother who grew up with him. She described him as strong on a different level. You've heard stories from Gojo. Unbelievably strong. A true fear to be reckoned with. You've heard Yuki speak of him. Free from cursed energy. Much like the one other person you're fond of.
You've never seen him before. Yet you just know it's him. It's a feeling you've never had before, but there's no possibility for it to be anyone else. No one else would jump in like he just did. (Except perhaps your Sukuna, but this ain't about him.)
It was a nice enough afternoon and I was going sort of stir crazy, so I at least had to pop over to the park.
...where I also had to take advantage of my great newish technology, and head "offroad" some.
Yeah, someone had a paper plate malfunction by those benches. I probably should have picked those up, but my gimpy ass did not.
One benefit to being a middle-aged AFAB creature with a cane: nobody is likely to assume you're a creeper if you take a little rest break on some benches by the playground.
I also had to head for for whatever passes for woods near our house.
Even that little foray up and down that pitiful little slope DID help demonstrate why this "starter" foot and ankle that I'm still on currently is not what they were recommending if you were planning to go on uneven terrain at all. 😒 (Which, that barely even counts.) Imagine stomping through the woods on a pretty well rigid doll foot and ankle, and you're pretty close. I am in better shape to fight the pegleg to get around now, but that basically was what it felt like.
I did choose not to venture down and back up the other side of that tiny ridge.
Hopefully they will actually swap this setup for the more "advanced" foot and ankle that they originally said I was going to get, since I can tell this custom socket isn't fitting right anymore. (Surprised it took that long to start causing problems, honestly. Especially in the beginning, it apparently isn't unusual for people to at least need serious adjustments every couple of weeks or month until their leg settles in some.)
Anyway, I at least did get up close with, like, fallen branches and shit. Because of course I was also scoping things out with that in mind, there are indeed also plenty of seemingly suitable leaves and sticks and bark pieces and stuff to keep my intended fancy isopods well supplied, within easy gimping distance of these apartments. They should be good with any of the common local tree species, AFAICT. And I seriously doubt anybody has been spraying that stuff down with pesticides.
I haven't been getting out nearly enough, for a variety of reasons I don't need to vent about now. But, it was good to actually get out and quite literally touch grass (and trees, and...) today. My mental and physical health both kinda need more of that.
